Subject: Increase Shift Points For Free IP: Logged
Message: Most people have said ways to get better shifts point is to get a shift kit or a performace PCM. Well I found a great way to increase the shift points and its free. For GenII's and under there is a button after the throttle linkage and you can push it and pull the cable (slightly) towards the firewall and adjust it to where ever you want. On GenIII's there is a white clip you take off then adjust the cable. I tried this and now it shifts at a higher RPM and you can definatley feel increased power because the tranny doesn't shift early. If you need a pic on how to do it go here....
http://www.fast4x4.net/
Goto "Pages on Site"..."How To's"..."Kick-down Cable Adjst"
Let me know if anyone else tries this and what they think afterwards.

Message: hmm I'd say I adjusted it about 1/2" maybe a little more...now it shifts at 2500rpm instead of 2000 or under. Gets up to speed fast now.

Message: I don't have 36000 miles on my truck yet but I think the adjustment helped the new TB & M-1 I put on recently to its full potential.

Message: I did that route, I think It screwed up my transmission! That's a bad tip, I would recommend putting it back to normal! I had adjusted it enough to shift harder and hold the gear longer, until a few months later it didn't shift out of first at WOT. Now I have pulled so much forward that it shifts sluggest sometimes, but it always shifts now even with WOT. I'll have to work on getting that working right later down the road. The dealer doesn't want to fix it due to all the after-market stuff on my engine now.

Message: Maybe I'll adjust it to where it doesn't shift so hard somewhere in between 2000 & 2500. I did notice it made hard shifts.

Message: If you want it to shift, WHEN YOU WANT IT TO SHIFT, then why the @%$ didn't you get a manual????
I test drove a 4.7 slowto, before I ordered my 5 spd. It was a POS, I wanted to wind it out and it would shift, etc.

Message: You must be that tuff guy with the manual. I always thought the tuff guys drive stick. Maybe its just because they like the feel of a hard rod and a ball in their hand. You are a pussy my friend. Some people drive automatics because they drive in stop and go traffic and dont want to deal with that never shifting out of first crap. I know for a fact there are some automatics that shift better then a manual. Im not saying its a dodge but in the higher priced cars the only reason to get a stick would be preference not performance.

Message: The R/T's don't come in a stick ya moron if it did I woulda gotten it cuz any high performance machine should come w/ the manual option. So I gotta deal w/ what I got and try and make it shift when I want to but w/ an auto.

Like the previous post said....RT's dont come standard.....So you MUST not have an RT eh?
....and automatics are as good as standards, if not better, depends what your trying to accomplish. As for our trucks, I need as much traction as I can get, so I happen to like autos, if I had a standard I would be spinning through 3 or 4th gear.

Message: If you auto-slush-box kids really want to step up to the plate and shift your own gears, why don't you get a full-manual valve body? That way, when you want it to shift, you HAVE to shift your own damn self.
That's right. It is fully manual, so those of you who wimper and cry about stop n go traffic won't have to push the wittle kwutch in and hurt your wittle weggs......
While you're in there, you might as well install a reverse shift pattern valve-body as well. That way you won't shift into neutral while you're bangin' gears. You'll be shifting away from neutral.......
Just food for thought.

Message: As soon as you find a reverse pattern manual valve body for a A518 or A500 let everyone know because nobody makes them right now . I used to run one in my 727 and it was great , it would spin for about 80 feet shifting into 2nd and 60 feet shifting into 3rd.

Message: Hell, while you guys are out buyin' a reverse pattern full manual shift body, why don't ya'll pick up a used 904 or 727 and get serious about your trannies........
Cook's transmissions in Spartanburg, SC has rebuilt race-ready 904's for $250.
Here's how it is........ You can either have a 360 from the factory or you can shift your own gears from the factory, but not both.
So, unless you are willing to get out your toolbox and your wallet or just buy a 4.7, then you're going to have to deal with it. Sorry.

Message: Only problem with buying a 4.7 5 speed dakota is that when I get home with it I would have to pull out the 4.7 and drop a 360 into it.

Message: The 45RFE is the AUTO tranny. I think the 5 speed manual is only good for about 300 horse - by the time most 360 owners are ready for the manual I'd think their motors could be modded over that.
