Subject: Took a WRX today...
IP: Logged

Message:
Today was about the fourth or fifth time this guy in a blue WRX and I got to the light at the same time in the morning. I read in another thread these things weren't to be messed with, so I always took off easy not wanting to damage the ego too bad. But this morning I decided to try my luck. I had a great reaction to the light and took him off the line. I could see him pulling up when I dropped second, but from there up to about 65 when we both let off, he coudn't get past my rear wheel. The guy looked pretty surprised when he pulled up next to me at the next light! My Dak loves this cold weather! I'm sure he would have smoked me past 65, but hey...

BTW I have a few questions. Anybody know a good performance shop in the Tampa area? Anybody have any feedback on KRC in Cocoa? And who makes the best repair manual for the Dak? I saw Chilton's on amazon.com.

May have been an auto, but 0-60 is certainly not the WRXs strong point. Still if it were a manual, and he was really trying (meaning a 3500 rpm clutch dump launch) he should beat you without mods. Manual WRXs will run high 13's to low 14's pure stock, Automatics with a good powerbrake are still in the 14's. Like you said I think you surprised him, and he was not operating at max capability.

Not to flame you, but chances are that he either wasn't ready at the light, or doesn't know how to launch his car, because he should have taken you off the line farely well(AWD). A stock WRX can cut 1.9 short times all day long, anywhere it wants to.
I don't know what kind of top end the 4.7l has but I'd guess that you'd still pull him over 65. Stock WRX's don't have a whole lot left after 1st gear.
Anyhow, nice kill.

Don't know about any performance shops in Tampa, but I'm glad to see another Dak driver from Tampa! I live in south Tampa because it's close to work (MacDill AFB). Ever get to the dragstrip at Bradenton for test & tune? Every now and then I go down there to watch. Their web site is www.bradentonmotorsports.com and there are some performance shop links off the main page, in addition to their schedules.

Repair manual: I've got the factory service manual and it's good...it assumes a basic level of automotive knowledge, but it explains things pretty well.

On the WRX...probably driven really poorly or had an automatic...or it could have been the non-turbo Impreza. They look just like the WRX's. Not trying to take anything away from the kill, but properly driven they can do 0-60 in under 6 seconds and the quarter mile somewhere in the 14's at about 95. My guess is the guy didn't know how to drive...I've heard they have a lot of turbo lag that will kill any hopes of winning a street race unless the driver is willing to abuse the clutch.

Dan thanks for the info on the strip, I've been looking for one locally. I'll look you up when I go down there, I'm over in Palm Harbor.

Duh...forgot about these guys:

They're on US 19, I think at Ulmerton Road. Been in there a couple of times but never bought anything. They've got to be at least half-way okay because last time I was there they had a Hemi crate motor on the showroom floor...can't remember how much they wanted for it but I had some brief fantasies about it fitting under the hood of my truck.

They hate it when an automatic truck (4.7) beats there little riced out stick shift.

If it said WRX on the back then it was a 2002, unless it was a fake. They didn't start selling the WRX here until last year as a 2002 model. My brother got deliverly of one of the first ones. The 2002 2.5 RS looks similar but doesn't have the hood scoop. It is quick, although we have yet to see who's faster. He got an automatic for better around town crusing, and the better AWD system the auto gets, but we drove a 5-speed just to make sure. He has gotten pretty good at launching his automatic to make up for the lag, and once it's rolling at about 20mph I'd say the automatics quicker shifts and no loss of boost actually make it faster then a 5-speed. The thing does NOT run out of steam at 60, thats when it's still pulling like crazy and I'd be scrared to race him from 50 up. Off the line with a powerbrake launch, the automatic still will squeal 3 tires and get right into boost. The manual could not be more then .5 to 1 sec faster tops. Right now there is still snow on the ground so he would be silly faster then me, hell about everything beats the R/T in this weather!

I have not been in a WRX yet but a ride in a well modded Celica all trac turbo opened my eyes 5 years ago. It was very quick!

Jon & Jimbo,

We should meet up at some point. I'm leaving in a couple hours and will be out of town for a couple days, but we should plan a mini-meet at some point...maybe at the dragstrip in Bradenton, or somewhere else in Tampa or St Pete. Shoot me an e-mail and we'll set something up, or I'll send one out when I get back.

And back on topic, take the WRX kill and run with it...I was more than happy to take my Porsche kill. Okay, it was about a year ago (before 32 inch tires) and it was a mid-80's 944, but it was on a dragstrip and he wasn't getting any closer at the end. But it's nice to say that I took a Porsche.

Sounds like a plan, I'd definitely like to go down to Bradenton. I've been wanting to run the 1/4 since I got my truck a year and a half ago. Any Saturday would be good for me (except this one). I noticed they have test and tune fairly often. Shoot me an e-mail when you get back, I'll make sure it's in my profile.

It must suck to own a fast stock little car and not know how to drive it. A kill is a kill, Jimbo won, fair and square -- if they were really racing, but knowing WRX owners, he was. If he took him by surprise or not, don't underestimate all vehicles -- Grand National for example -- the WRX lost because of it.

Where there is a WRX post, there is a post by Hersbird! How 'bout that weather BTW!

The 0-60 is the WRX's strong point, it sounds like he was treed pretty hard and wasn't expecting it.

But, he lost because of that. That's why people make sleepers, because they wanna kill someone who's not even looking for it.

Ultimate sleeper: Buick Roadmaster Wagon w/ Imp SS suspension components, 383 stroker, w/ Paxton blower. A setup like that might have a cop questioning his radar gun :)

Yeh I got to defend the WRX, it is about my favorite import (that is reasonably priced). I do envey my brothers WRX in this type of weather, I end up staying home, geeking on the computer, while he makes Taco Bell runs in a blizzard just for fun. There is a used 2002 manual WRX at the Ford dealer in that limited yellow. The sales guy told my step-dad they paid $21,000 for it. If I had the money for a 3rd car I'd be all over it. It probably best to pass that car up because I'm sure its the same car that sat at the Subie dealer for 2 weeks, cause the original owner ran into the ditch the first day she owned it! It was just some cosmetic front damage but you never know. The other awesome 3rd car for sale here is a 98 audi A8 quattro in perfect shape with 45,000 miles asking $29,000. Those run $60,000+ new, some 3rd car huh? You guys actually have an Audi dealer up in Kalispell right? My wifes boss drove all the way to Spokane to get a Volvo XC, they were debating between that and the Audi Allroad, they shold have got the Audi cause that Volvo sucks, they don't even like it as much as the Outback they traded in for it.

No way that it's that cheap...WHAT the hell is wrong with it??? I'd rather the S8 though...

What's the problem with driving, I've been driving in it just fine, I got 380 pounds over the axle, and studs, but I think the weight is my savior...I am able to just plough through stuff. 2WD too.

soo, how hard do you think it would be to make a AWD truck?? hehe.

Dont get me wrong I love the WRX. Buddy of mine has one and its fun as hell driving in the snow. But I still wouldnt think there would be a whole lot you could do with it as far as getting it perform in the quarter is concerned. Low 14's high 13's is deffinatly quick but how much faster could you get them to go?? I personally have yet to see somebody with a souped up WRX. And there very well maybe (there always is in cars like this) someone out there with a WRX that can break into the 12's... But even if there is its probably only a handful. Highly unlikely that you would ever meet up with one of these "12 second" WRX'es at the light; (Almost as unlikely as meeting up with a 6 speed Trans-Am or Camero). Some might call this a flame but it is the Dak board...

I would take my Dak over the WRX anyday.

I love my Dak, but I've been seriously considering getting a WRX after I graduate. I'll keep the Dak most likely, since I don't owe anything on it.

What drove me to this?

Well, my mom has an Subaru Outback that is just a -blast- to drive. Believe that? A station wagon! That thing -moves-. When I moved down to Orlando for school, I found one of my friends down here had bought a WRX. Since then we've put on a Blitz blow-off valve, turbo timer, and he did an air intake yesterday. Launched correctly and shifting at some ungodly RPM (not Redline though), that thing -moves-, it's like getting kicked in the butt when he shifts. Manauverable as heck too.

Dunno...

Might just trade in my '00 3.9L Regular cab for a '03 Club Cab 4.7 (or 5.7 if available then in a stick! Whee!). We'll see, plenty of time yet!

I happy you won your race! I have to tell ya that their is no way a Dak could ever beat a WRX if booth vechiles and driver know what they are doing and race to win. You would have to turning 450 to 500 HP at the crank to match the WRX's performance. The WRX has better HP to Weight ratio, It has better aerodynamics,it has better traction and it has a better weight distribution! Here is the real kicker it can go past 98MPH before the speed limiter kicks in!!

xplikt, I'm telling you that A8 looks like a 1 owner, babied car. It's that pearl white, with a tan leather interior, HID lightning, new Blizzacks on it, and I was totally expecting the dealer to be asking $35,000 for it, but the next day the paper had it, in the regular ad, for $29,000 and it has been in the ad for the last week. Look at the Missoulian under the "Flannagins" ad, I think it's still there but with this slick ass weather we got, it had a good chance of selling. I've heard the insurance on those A8's is horrendus because of the aluminum construction. It's not so much my driving in this crap I worry about, it's all the retards out there (no offense to tards). I dread stopping at a light with nobody behind me because I have to watch the plumber in his Ford E350 van sliding sideways up behind me (that actually happened this morning). This isn't even the worst snow we've had but the roads are in the worst shape they've been in for the last two years, and people are not slowing down. I actually have the 17's on the front (I had them on all 4's but I could barely get up the home street when the first 1/2 inch fell). I ran the studs all year just to take them off two weeks ago after we had a month of bare roads. Now they say this weather pattern will be this way all next week.
Big59er, over at www.i-club.com there are quite a few very fast WRXs. There are some under $100 modded WRXs out there that run mid to high 13's. $1000 will give 275 HP.
I would take my Dakota and $5000 over a WRX anyday as well, but if they were the same price then it may be a different story. (although being such a DC fan, I think I would have still bought the Dakota).

Insurance is cheaper for the Dakota too. For me, 18 year old male, the Dakota was the fastest 2002 vehicle for the cheapest insurance, no joke -- and price for that matter. The Altima was real close though, but I don't think my inusrance company knows/cars that it run 14.74 stock, lol.

Hersbird, you're tellin' me, it's like people don't care or notice that it SNOWED and it's slick as hell. People are going the, or over, the speed limit and drving around like crap. People guning it, slamming the gas from a start and their tail ends are flying all over the place. I've seen more fender benders, parking lot/side street parking dents, rear end smashing that I have ever seen in my life. I also hate those fukkers with 4WD that think if they are in 4WD they can drive over the speed limit...hell no!

Wednesday I saw a winebago (sp?) towing a truck doing about 30 in town in a 25...it hit it's brakes and took an entire block to stop...too bad it wasn't an exact block, he slid right THRU an intersection!

Oh yeah, about bi-weekly I see a woman in a large truck slam the gas parked ont he side of the street and they fishtail and destory a sign..

If you are going but 5-10 under the limit in a 45-55 in bad conditions, people freak out and try to pass you and flash their beams etc and then zoom by fishtailing...

This moring I really saw something that could have been horrible, in the middle of the 8am 'rush'. I live off of the fist main light as you come into town on highway 93 where the speed limit is still 55 mph. I'm waiting to pull with a right on red onto the highway and I see the light change. My light goes green but I see a fully loaded log truck just still screaming down the highway. He pretty much just locks em up and slides righ through the very old red light. Luckly nobody pulled out cause I don't think he ever got below about 30 MPH! I followed him all the way through town after that, and he drove like a grandma after that, he probably had to change his shorts! You'd think you have to get a special license to drive something like that... oh wait you do. That light is a great place to do full 0-60 blasts in the summer, but sacry in the winter.

Big59er, It's a turbo car, cars that have a stock turbo have TONS of potential for modding. The stock Mitsubishi TD04 on the WRX will push enough air to make about 270hp efficiently, anything after that and it's more or less just forcing hot air into the engine. Put a bigger turbo on, bigger injectors/pump and a Fuel Controller, open up the exhaust, and crank the boost up and that scooby is a little rocket.

I would hope it has a TD04, but what trim? With the current 14.2psi it's pushing would cause any TD03 to just blow hot air or close to it. 14.7psi max maybe. Don't forget high octane with that much boost :) Even with 8CR 14psi+ is high.

Go any bigger with the Turbo could cause even more lag. Why abuse the car with 3-4k rpm drops? Can't be good for the car. Kind of sucks, because the AWD drive system hurt performance in the long run, after take off it just slows down the car. Almost getting to be a S2000 needing 8k to move the car :) LOL
