Message: The Hemi Returns
DaimlerChrysler’s iconic V-8 is reborn to power trucks and cars in high volume.
Once it was thought to be extinct, slayed forever by the twin forces of fuel economy and exhaust emissions. When it roamed the streets of the Earth, it shook the pavement like no other, leaving great stripes of smoking rubber, quivering competitors and shattered records in its wake.
It was Chrysler’s Hemi, the king of all American muscle car V-8s. The mere sight of its voluptuous valve covers, each sprouting four central spark plug wires, had nearly the same effect on male car enthusiasts as Linda Vaughn in her Hurst T-shirt. The ability to produce mountains of power made the Hemi an icon. And DaimlerChrysler intends to bring it back.
Sources at the automaker and its suppliers confirm that the company will produce an all-new 5.7L (353 cu. in.) ohv Hemi V-8, beginning in late 2001. It will replace the old 5.9L V-8 used in Dodge trucks and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The reborn Hemi will wear aluminum cylinder heads to reduce mass. It will have two spark plugs per cylinder, to increase flame propagation, speed combustion and reduce emissions. And to boost fuel economy, the engine will feature a cylinder deactivation system for steady-state driving.
Even with its cast-iron cylinder block, the new 5.7L will weigh less and be more compact than the 5.9L. And with just one camshaft (in the cylinder block) and two valves per cylinder, it will handily beat the multicam, multivalve Ford and Toyota truck V-8s on unit cost. In fact, DaimlerChrysler insiders say the pushrod Hemi cost less to develop and produce than the company’s own 4.7L sohc V-8, introduced last year.
The Hemi will be built in DaimlerChrysler’s Saltillo, Mexico, engine plant. Initial volume will approach 300,000 units per year, but that’s expected to rise substantially if North American light truck demand stays high.
The engine isn’t just for trucks. AI has learned that in February, the Hemi V-8 was approved for the rear-wheel drive derivative of the 2004 large sedan (LX-LJ) program. It’s expected to include two famous model names from the Hemi’s glory days: the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300. The latter will be a successor to today’s fwd 300M sports sedan. It may also spawn a production version of the 300C Hemi roadster concept car introduced at this year’s Detroit auto show.
Power, Simplicity, Low Cost
How did such a seemingly relic engine design get the nod for production in the unleaded, low-emissions 21st century?
"One of the program’s drivers was the desire to have a very high-output engine, without the cost, complexity and mechanical hardware of four-valve engines," explains Floyd Allen, vice president-powertrain product engineering, at DaimlerChrysler’s technical center in Auburn Hills, Mich. "The hemispherical combustion chamber allows us to have two large valves, which give excellent breathing."
If the production engine’s output equals DaimlerChrysler’s claims for the concept engine, it’ll be worthy of its name. The 5.7L in the 300C show car is said to produce one horsepower and one pound-foot of torque per cubic inch. That puts it in Corvette LS1 territory.
Allen, who stressed in an AI interview that the Hemi is still officially a "concept," admits not all of the engine’s emissions work is done. But he seems confident that "with large bore sizes, a piston that has some crown to it and a high compression ratio, dual spark plugs will be a significant advantage" in meeting exhaust standards. We’ll bet that the Hemi’s cylinder heads, like those of the 4.7L Jeep V-8, are configured for future emissions-control hardware such as internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), air-assist fuel injectors and possible air injection.
According to Allen, engineers have been "putting ideas into hardware" for over a year. All of the basic head design, CAE and combustion analysis was done in-house. From the very start, the engine was a two-valver and there was no excitement for overhead camshafts. "They add width," Allen reasons, "and we’re trying to give less space for powertrain and more space for occupants."
Allen would only share a few design details. He says the new Hemi has double rocker shafts per head, like its predecessors. But unlike them, the 5.7’s valve gear is fully enclosed within the head walls, hence the shallow valve cover.
The 5.7L won’t have variable valve timing like some of its ohc competitors. Allen did reveal that the cylinder deactivation is handled on the tappet end, not the rocker shaft end – which means it’s a different system than that of Mercedes’ V-8 and V-12.
According to recent reports in our sister publication, American Metal Market, DaimlerChrysler chose a sourcing strategy for the 5.7L based in large part on local Mexico-based vendors. This was for cost and to satisfy local content requirements. The aluminum cylinder heads will be supplied by Nemak SA of Monterrey. Powder-metal (copper-steel) connecting rods are sourced from MascoTech Sintered Components-Mexico. Powder-metal rod bearing caps from GKN Sinter Metals, Inc. And the Hemi’s camshaft is a CWC-Textron piece.
Last month, Hemi V-8s began to spin the new dynamometers in Auburn Hills. Performance testing and rudimentary durability testing were underway. Soon the pavement may shake again.

Message: I'm good friends w/ a guy at a Dodge place here in the Dallas area and he says there has already been 2 new Hemi's in for engine problems...one had problems w/ the rockers, he didn't mention what the other one had. Said the guy had only driven his Ram 2 days when the engine had the problem.
Hope this isn't a problem for all of em.

Message: Robbie--Not really, it's not all good. If you talk
to the tuners, the horsepower is there. But the
combo is not right. The drive-by-wire system,
won't let you hot rod the Hemi. On the dyno,
the horse power is spiked. As you pedal the
gas, and the engine comes alive, the
drive-by-wire and torque management
system, will start to close the throttle. Not to
good for performance. Don't forget the gas
pedal is not hooked up to the throttle body.

Message: I work at a dealership in "Sin city" and we have yet to see a Hemi come in the shop for any maintenance, other then an oil change! Also, I recently purchased a 2004 Hemi Ram 1500, 2dr, 2wd. The Mayor has over 2000 HARD miles on it (from full throttle takeoffs at every light, to speeds of 105 (max allowed by the computer) on the highway), twice every weekend back and forth between Vegas and Riverside, Ca. and I have had absolutely no problems with it! This is the best package to come from Chrysler since The Little Red Express in 1978, but it's a Hemi!!

Message: I've got a 2003 4*4 quad cab with the hemi and have had it back to the dealer for a rough idle at startup, it felt like it was going to die. They reprogrammed the computer, but 2 weeks later it is happening again. I put it in drive and it would barely pull its self. I am NOT happy and will get it fixd right or they will give me a new truck to replace mine with just 6000 miles on it.
