Message: I own a 2003 Ram 1500 Quad cab 4x4 with a Hemi. I work for a Dodge dealer and I haven't seen any problems with the 5.7 until recently. We had seen issues with the valve springs breaking and dropping a valve. We've only had one case of this happening, but was advised several have been seen. I've had mine now for 7 months, got 10000 miles on it, and no problems what so ever. I'm not easy on the truck either. I've got a flowmaster dual exhaust on it now, and i'm looking for any other mods that I can do, just can't find any at this time. But definetly one of the best engines that chrysler has out at this time

Message: Ed,
I ordered an 04 Hemi Durango which will be in early Feb. A Few questions for you being that you work for a dealer and all:
- What mods do you forsee becoming available for the Hemi. I have been hounding K&N for a month now about developing at least a drop in replacement filter for the Durango application. K&N has an FIPK intake and drop in for your Ram but being that the airbox is different on the Hemi Durango they haven't developed one yet, they need a test vehicle and being that I live in FL I can't go to their shop in CA.
- Why does the Hemi have 345 hp in the Ram and only 335 hp in the Durango?? Any thoughts??
- Lastly, any advice on the initial break in period with my new Hemi??
Thanks Ed!

Message: I understand that in the 04 Durango, they had to move the catalytic converter forward about 10 inches for emissions. The moved caused a 10 HP loss.

Message: just my luck. Dodge truly did shoehorn that Hemi under the hood of the Durango!! The last two plugs look like they reside right under the dash!!

Message: I doubt just moving it forward would cause that kind of loss. Adding the precats to give the 4.7 three cats only cost 5 hp.

Message: My Hemi was fixed with reprogramming the powertrain control module. Sine then it has ran like a gem. It will out run and out tow any other half ton. Have you seen the new RAM commercial on TV that shows the truth about HEMI power Vs. the prissy F-150. HEMI RAM RULES.

Message: It was reprogrammed at the dealer. My problem was low idle when shifting from park to reverse. After 2 trips it was found to be this problem and was fixed at the dealer. As far as towing, I have towed several antique cars with my HEMI and it pulls as if nothing is on the trailer. Thats why that commercial from FORD is such crap. As far as stock trucks go, there is no comparison to the hemi ram. Thanks for all the info and I will pass along any info that I find.

Message: Highway mileage avg is 14-16 on open road. 10-11 around town. Towing is about 9 mpg. As I said before this truck pulls as if empty. You give up mileage for performance and this truck backs up the claims of most power. By the way mine is quad cab 4x4 with 17" tires. I don't know about the 20" models. But I will say that they are night and day between performance. Those 20's look cool but are big and heavy and decrease performance.

Message: I concur with Josh, I am 1200 miles into my Hemi Durango and on the highway I am lucky to get 14 mpg. I need to take my foot out of it a little bit. thank god for the 27 gallon tank, although it does call for 89 octane. overall I am extremely pleased with the Hemi. I ordered the just released K&N drop in filter for it yesterday in addition to removing the infamous "rubber flap" all Dodges come with to keep a monsoon from coming into the engine compartment. Those are the extent of my mods along with replacing all exterior bulbs with PIAA's (even the license plate light) I am the anal king!

Message: Dont know if this board is still active, But took my 04 1500 Hemi in for 30000ml. Hendricks group service today. Also had a pinion seal leak. Tried to drive home, started missing like a plug wire off. They said it was a cam sensor. Then said I had a valve spring problem. Got to pull head and see if there is damage done. I only have flowmasters, no chip or K&N. 31500 miles on it. If anyone else has seen this, would like to hear. Thanks, Randy

Message: Reading your messages answers my question. Dodge does have a problem with valve springs on the Hemi. Mine has 28K miles and broke a #2 exhaust valve spring. As a result it also melted an intake runner. It's fixed now by warranty but I'm wary of the rest of the springs.

Message: Well picked the truck up. They said it was the intake plastic that broke off on no.1 cyl. They said the plastic got stuck in valve spring...? I asked how could it come through combustion chamber, valve guide. They said some answers they can not explain.lol. New intake and it seems fine.
