Message: Hey andrew
I didn't make mine, Quick D Tony did. But, when I was assembling it, I realized how easy it would be to make one. All you need is a mandrel bent 3" diameter piece of exhaust pipe (or pvc) and a rubber clamp connector. Here is a pic, and a quick sketch that I drew:

Message: Here are some pictures of my modified intake on my 2001 4.7l.
I am using the stock airbox with a K&N Drop-in filter.
I have used a fernco elbow, short PVC pipe, and a fenco
coupler to connect to the airbox. I then extended the air
intake to the grill using 4" aluminum ducting.
A modified black plastic sewer pipe connector
is inside of the airbox to connect the aluminum
ducting, and a sewer pipe 4"round to 3"x4" rectangular
was used to get the air from the grille.
I had to cut some slits in the 3x4 pipe to fit around
the a/c lines.

Message: 4.7, the K&N comes with its own connector. You just push the pipe into the rubber connector, and tighten the clamps.

Message: andrew
In regards to Gen IIs air intake system, I know exactly what you are up against. I own a Gen II Dakota as well, and I wanted to construct my own home intake system. Unfortunately, the big round air filter setup on Gen IIs doesn't allow it.
Read Lesley's post (second from the top), the one with the picture of her setup and schematic of a homemade system. What you will have to get is a black round plastic airhat (sits on top of the TB) from a 1997+ Dakota 3.9/5.2/5.9 engine. That black round airhat fits perfectly on Gen II Dakotas. After that, you can follow Lesley's schematic on building your own intake.
Here is a good pic of someone putting a new style airhat on his Gen II Dak :
http://cruznlo.tripod.com/RichardsInfo.JPG
I almost forgot, you'll need a longer hose that connects the air breather to the airhat OR you can get the KN air breathers (you'll have to plug up the air breather connector at the back of the airhat tho').

Here is one for sale andrew. I would act on that REAL fast, there are a lot of people looking for them, and the dealership charges a LOT of money just for the air hat (over $100 up here).

Message: Lesley is right, if the airhat is still for sale, act quickly. There are many Gen II owners + some Ram owners looking for these airhats, and the dealer is asking quite abit of money for one. You may want to check your local auto wreckers as well.
I was lucky enough to find someone selling his entire air box, accordian tube, and airhat for $50 US including shipping.
Lesley
Could you post the link of the KN airhat ? It may cost more, but those looking for an alternative may consider it as an option.
