which is the weakest link between the two? im thinking of getting some slicks because traction is not to be had on my truck.

are these pretty solid? should i not worry about them? or would the clutch be the first to go?

Probably the NV3500, it's only rated at 300Lb/ft

Is there anyway to increase the torque rating on the nv3500? I don't know enough about transmissions to even know what to look for.

I'm going to have to disagree... The 9 1/4" rear is the weaker of the two. I put over 150 1/4 mile runs on my truck, mostly with slicks, dumping the clutch at 3000-3500 and the first thing to go was the spider gear set in the rear. The transmission is still alive and well. I was surprised, I figured the trans would have grenaded first! The rear is cheaper to fix to !

I wouldn't say that, the NV3500 was not produced for this kind of abuse. I think the 9 1/4 may be OVERrated !! I was pretty shocked to see it break as bad as it did. I was expecting the trans to go way before that rear. DC has been using the 9 1/4" rear for probably 30 years. I guess the quality of the component parts is not there anymore.

Seems to be working just fine, no complaints. It will still nail 3rd gear hard, even with the Nitto 450, 275/50/17's, so I guess its still holding solid. It has 42,000 miles on it currently.

That's a tough call.....

The rearend broke first (bad pinion bearing) then the trans had probs also (another bad bearing?). Both were when the truck still went 14's. I'm more gentle on the equipment now with the additional power. Neither is bulletproof that's for sure.

Well I have to defend Dodge on this one!!! OEM spider gears were never designed to take 150 hard 3500 rpm drag race style launch's. I am honestly suprised that they did not crack sooner. Their is not anything wrong with the rear end. You are simply not useing the truck for it's designed purpose. Something in the drivetrain has to absorb all of the shock from a launch and it sounds like the spider gears did a good job. Have you had to replace u-joint yet? Proffesional drag racer would be happy with 150 hard launch's from a rear end!

I should have known someone would take it to heart! As I have said before.. DC did not produce this truck, or any of its components for this type of abuse, period. I would have thought the trans would have failed prior to the rear breaking. I was not surprised that "something" eventually broke, like I said, it was not produced for this type of abuse.

and nope, the u joints are just fine, I guess they were stronger than that spider gear set? no?

Remember, the spider gear has 3.55 or 3.92 times the amount of torque being applied as the U joints.

I'd guess the clutch would start slipping first. Must be a grabber :) So what are you going to replace it with? Ford 9 inch?
