If anyone is interested I am working on swaping my truck over to a 5 speed from a automatic. I have the truck running but it throws a check engine code due to no transmision being plugged in. I have a new computer module coming from a manual transmision vehicle. What a diference in performance, I guess I am just a shifting kind of guy. I will never again own a boring automatic!

Its the best performance upgrade that you can do IMO,when I was test driving the Dakotas the auto trans just didnt cut it compared to the 5 speed, had to wait 2 months but it was well worth the wait to factory order and get what you really want

Tim, how much work is involved in that project (time wise) and what's the approximate cost? Thanks

The total cost thus far is aprox $1600 that is finding everything in the salvage yards. My computer is still throwing check engine but its only because it is looking for the auto tranny, the engine runs flawless. I have a used computer module coming from a 5speed 5.2 litr. I can give you more details of the swap if needed.

Anyone have any idea if the 5 speed from a 4.7 or 5.2 would handle the power and torque of a modded out R/T? Its about at 330-340HP...would that tranny hold up?

for the r/t'ers wanting info on a manual tranny swap, it looks like this place called keisler auto
is your best bet for a swap. If there is enough interest shown, they will proabably make a setup. You can check you their site at www.keislerauto.com and there is a thread on the DML with a little more info at
http://www.dakota-truck.net/ARCHIVES/0203/0172.html
Just thought the r/t'ers would like to know.

I think the crank trigger senor is different for the automatics then the manuals.

The sensor going to the auto tranny is looking for a certain voltage, if you could simulate the voltage it should be fine.

I have a great personal interest in tranny swap please keep me posted.

THE CRANK TRIGGER IS DIFFERENT, THE SENSOR FOR THE AUTO IS SPACED BACK FROM THE CRANK DUE TO THE LARGER DIAMETER OF THE FLYWHEEL. YOU COULD BUY THE NEW SENSOR OR JUST SPACE IT BACK ABOUT 1/4 INCH AS I DID. SINCE MY LAST POST HERE I DID INSTALL THE MANUAL COMP MODULE AND IT WORKS PERFECT, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I ALSO INSTALLED A HURST SHIFTER AND THIS WORKS GREAT. MY MOTOR IS MODIFIED WITH MP HEADERS AND CUSTOM 3 INCH EXHAUST,BORED OUT THROTTLE BODY, MSD IGNITION. I ALSO HAVE THE STOCK 3.55 GEARS WITH THE LIMITED SLIP. THE TRANNY HAS TAKEN 2500 RPM DUMPS AND FULL OUT SPEED SHIFTING WITH NO PROBLEMS. I THINK THIS TRANNY IS TOUGHER THAN THE RATED 300 FT LB OF TORQUE. THE SWAP INVOLVES CHANGING TRANNY/BELLHOUSING, DRIVE SHAFT, CLUTCH LINKAGE (HYDROLIC), FABRICATED THE MID SHAFT BEARING CARIER FOR THE TWO PEICE DRIVE SHAFT, CHANGING TO THE MANUAL COMP MODULE, REMOVING THE AUTO SELECTOR HANDLE, AND CUTTING THE HOLE IN THE FLOOR BOARD. THE WHOLE SWAP LOOKS TOTALY FACTORY INSTALLED. I INSTALLED A STOCK 11 INCH CLUTCH AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS. IF ANYONE HAS SPECIFIC QUESTIONS I WILL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER THEM. MY TRUCK IS A 98 DAKOTA CLUB CAB WITH A 5.2, THE TRANNY IS A 99 NV3500 5 SPEED. THE LINKAGE,, DRIVE SHAFT AND FLYWHEEL ARE OUT OF A 97 DAK CC. THE COMPUTER MODULE HAD TO COME FROM A 98 DAK 5.2 LTR WITH A 5 SPEED, THE 99 COMP WOULD NOT WORK.

I did this sam swap with my 99 R/t i used the all the parts off a donor truck, mine is supercharged with a 8psi upgraded sn-93 paxton, i found no problems whatsoever with the tranny being able to take the abuse, it should handle your N/A motor without any problems.
