Subject: $400 in mods on a 4.7 - what to get???? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dakota 4X4 SLT Plus, 4.7 V8, auto. I want to spend about $400 on some performance mods, what should I get? Name brands would be great, even some recommended sites with good prices and service. I live in Virginia, so the truck will need to pass emissions and I don't want anything that will void the warranty. I'm looking for power as well as better mileage, if possible.
Thanks for your time!
Steve

Message: Its the trucks computer. Some vendors offer a reprogramming for between $350.00 and $400.00. You have to send your PCM off to get it reprogrammed. You usually won't get the most out of any of your mods unless you have the PCM done first. KRC, KenneBell, ASEchips, Mike Leach, and B&G are the main PCM reprogramming/chip vendors I know of. ASE boosts the shortest turn around time for getting you your PCM back and ASE is the only vendor with h.p./tq. numbers listed. 26 h.p. and 33lbs/ft. Not bad for 349.00. I haven't seen a dyno sheet though. Go to those web sites I listed above to get the most bang for that 400.00. Or just send off you PCM if you want to get more power all at once. With the PCM done you'll have to run 91 or better octane.

Message: I'm not sure if it's out yet but a K+N fipk(fuel injector performance kit) should help both performance and gas milage. Last I heard the kit for the 4.7 has not been released yet. It's not producing the increases K+N are looking for. I'm still waiting too!! Anyone else heard if the kit is available yet??

Message: I too say get the computer flashed for the best performance. Thats what I am going to do. I have the Jet 2 module and other mods but don't really feel to much, some but not much more than stock. The 2002 has a better intake and from what I have been told the exhaust is good like it is. As far as mods on the 2002 here is what I was told by the aftermarket association.
"Regrettably we have none of the parts you mentioned or any others available yet, but they are coming. One of the main causes for the delay is the emissions certification process, which causes the high performance aftermarket parts to lag behind the introduction of new vehicles. Even if the new year vehicle is unchanged from the previous year, they still must have a new emissions certification done before releasing the parts."
That's why they don't have the K&N air charger for the 2002.

Message: Because you have a 2000 you have a 65mm TB. You can get a 68mm from the dealer for 219.00(this is what I was quoted but I've heard cheaper). Port out the inside lip of the TB for a little more punch. The K&N Fipk hasn't been released for any 4.7L I don't think. Either way its a K&N on a tube like the others. Save your money and get one of the others. I just ordered a 360intakez today. It has a 9 inch K&N cone filter attached to it. This was 180.00. Or you can build on for alot less using homedepot supplies. I wanted one that would dress up the engine a little. Get and IAT (35.00); 3923 plugs($1.20); a 180 tstat (10.00). You've got options

Message: I installed the 360intakez on my truck a while back. Noticed a small increase in power. I ended up leaving the airhat in place because without it it was too loud and the whole intake was held in place only by the clamp on the TB (not good for 4wheeling). For the price it is a well worth mod. Just 3 days ago I put a Flowmaster Delta flow 50 Series, 2.5in/2.5out. Now that really seem to have freed up some ponys! I only spent about $330 for both parts, which leaves you enough to get the IAT, plugs and T-stat. Good luck!

Message: I'm thinkin that once I get the 68mm TB I should notice a good difference when combined with the 360intake. Being that my truck is a 00' 5spd 4x2 CC with 3.92's...maybe I'll notice a little more than you Chris. I almost got the IAT, 180tstat, and 3923's the other day but Paypal seems to not like me very much. For $66.00 bucks for all three of those...thats a pretty good deal.
I almost got the QC but I couldn't justify the extra weight and space. Especially since I drive alone most of the time. I'm actually thinking about getting an RC 4.7L in a couple of years.
