Subject: Throttle Blades? IP: Logged
Message: OK I decided to go ahead and port a TB for a 5.2 when I pulled the upper assembly apart to clean it. When I went to remove the screws from the first throttle blade, the damn thing broke off. Even after using some penetrating lube it broke. Anyone else have this happen at all? Any recomendations for the rest of the bolts? Now I have to try and find a EZ out kit small enough for this bastard.
BTW, i'm going to be tapering the shaft that the blades are on, anyone know of a place where I can get some countersunk screws small enough for this?
Thanks

Message: I had the same problem. The blade screws backed out about 3-4 turns then the heads broke off..On every screw. I came to the conclusion that the threads were mechanically distorted to prevent backout. I then bought a small easy out and a 5/32 drill. Do not try to back out the screw from the head side. Drill from the other side and run whats left of the screw on through the shaft. (the screws don't want to back out but will continue through just fine)..Chuck up the 5/32 drill in a dremel about 1/2 speed and use plenty of cutting fluid. It will take about 20 minutes to do all 4..Be careful and don't wander with the bit. Thenm easy out ..Works great..Just take your time ...As far as new screws use a countersunk 8-32 screw. Don't forget to locktite them in when installing...Mike

Message: This is exactly the reason why you fellas shouldnt be so overzealous in your quest for still more performance! If you had left the throttle blades alone, the screw wouldnt have broke, catch on? Leave things alone, except for genuine necessary maintainence and youll be fine.Dont bite off more than you can chew, find a qualified technician if you have any doubts about your capability to do a particular project.

Message: On the 4.7 I just ground the screws flush with the shaft and did a mild thinning of the shaft itself. Then with the butterfly held open tapered the leading and trailing edges of the butterfly. CW,
Wait for the temperature and my courage to get up to give the tb a little more aggressive porting. Your computer ought to have waken up by now-How are the cams?

Message: In my previous post I mis-stated the drill bit size. It was a 5/64" bit not a 5/32".The easy out I bought was from Home Depot. It came with the bit with it. I bought 2 more bits just in case. They dull quick if you're not careful. Use good feed, speed, and lubrication. I don't recall the part# of it. I can check for a part# if you have no luck...Let me know...Sorry bout the confusion

Message: They seem pretty good. Nice increase in torque. We have benn getting snow every day lately so the roads are a mess. Still no performance numbers. By the time the roads are good enouph to go on I will try and see if it made a difference. Cruising down the highway is so easy now. I was going up one incline when I was showing a friend the truck and it would pull up the incline at 110 and increase in speed. Like I say all irrelevant because of the roads. Gotta get the master card paid off so that I can get back to modding this truck. Traction bars would be a good thing or better rear shocks. Wheel hop in the cold weather is ugly.
