Subject: Break-in period IP: Logged
Message: OK, my beloved DAK shold be arriving any day now, and I intend on adding a Gibson single 3" and a Z-tube. Anyone have an opinion as to how long I need to wait before modifying a brand new engine? These are the only mods I plan on doing, and I've heard some say that I need to pamper the engine for at least 1,000 - 1,500 miles before driving it in the manner which I intend to, and others say that I should drive it the way I plan on driving it right from the start, since the engine has a "learning" computer.
By the way... my e-mails keep getting kicked back from intenseperformance. Anyone know of another way to buy the Z-tube? Please hurry... My truck's almost here, and I believe I'm beginning to perspire.......

Message: 500 miles should be plenty. After that you can put the mods on. You should still take it easy till about 1000 miles though. The cat back and the z - tube could be put on right away and no harm will be done to the engine. The break in period is all about the engine finding its groove. Seating the piston rings. Working in the new bearings and starting a uniform wear pattern. But as far as your mods go it has nothing to do with the break in.

Message: These new motors with moly filled rings need no break-in and the cam will be broke-in 10 min. just at idle. The old steal rings in the cast block would or could leave a lip in the cylinder at the top and take time to wear in to the block for a good seal. Those days are gone. Get her home and drop the hammer.

Message: Agree with the others on break-in period. I sorta had to drive mine reasonably gently at first...800 miles after I bought it I drove it from central CA coast to central FL coast. But regardless of driving style, you will likely pick up some power during the first few thousand miles. Sometime during my cross country trip, mine picked up quite a few ponies. When new I couldn't spin the tires at all. Now it is very easy to do so, even with a heavy cap on the back.

Message: I agree with the majority. It doesn't hurt to take it easy for a thousand miles. It's probably true that most of the engines of today are either broken in at the factory or they're built in such a way that break-in is not necessary but why take a chance.
As for the mods you want to do, they can be done anytime. They would not have an effect on break-in anyway. However, instead of the Z tube, I would wait and see what kind of FIPK K&N is coming out with for your engine. Supposed to be nice!
In any case, congrats on your new Dak!!!!

Message: I'd like to investigate the K+N, but I probably won't have the patience to wait arond until they get around to releasing it... OH, WAIT! I just talked to Chrysler, and they pushed back the build date of my truck AGAIN. What was I thinking?!
