Subject: wierd gear noises IP: Logged
Message: I have a 4.7 2001 auto. Whenever I shift from P or N into R or D there is this wierd ratcheting sort of noise for a second. I know it isn't my brakes because i mash them down and it still makes the noise. Is this normal or do I need to get it checked out? by the way only has 16k on it. thanks

Message: It's the sound of a hydraulic pump in the transmission. Every Chrysler transmission makes the sound every time it shifts, but you can only hear it when not moving or when moving very slowly. Perfectly normal.

Message: thanks alot. My only other experience with a dakota is a stick shift so it wouldn't make the noise. Now I can sleep at peace, dreaming wonderful dreams of eating civics for lunch.
