They're worth it for that final "get the last few HP out of the engine" modification.

Message: They worked for me. Just remeber, since most of the kits out there have a larger Alternator pulley which will cause the charge on your truck to get low when you let the truck sit for a couple of minutes. I hear they work great when you instal an electric fan. Look at the Dyno charts on Jon Smiths website, (www.fast4x4.net). The next thing on my list is to get rid of the mechanical fan with an electric.

Message: We'll it's been a year now since I've had them on and I've been through one alternater because of them. Actually it's because of the Alternator pulley. Right now I have the factory pulleys on because I wasen't sure if I wanted to put a 6-rib belt on 7-rib pulleys (the only size belts available for waterpump + crank OR just crank underdrive pulleys is 6-rib). I've heard "stories" of belts slipping off of pulleys that have and extra rib. So far, the waterpump and crank pulley might go back on (I miss the extra power!!!) because I'm finding a lot of DML'ers who have been doing this for years.

Message: I have the ASP under drive pulley which fits the late 2000 and 2001 5.9L (and 5.2) engines. This is the only pulley I could find for these engines as it has the harmonic balancer and crank pulley as a single unit. Really expensive, abount $160 for the one pulley.
Other year models have a seperate pulley that bolts on to the harmonic balancer.
I had my under drive pulley and my headers installed at the same time. So I can't really say how much performance increase was a result of just the pulley.
No problems with the 6 rib belt after 4,000 miles.

Message: bill, i know you did the pully and headers an the same time, but what gains did you notice out of them? i think headers are in the near future for me and i just want to know how well they work.
also what mods do you have?
thanks

Message: I have to say that I was impressed with the results of my "under drive pully/header" modification. It was pretty expensive though (about a grand. I bought the parts and had them installed by Dealer). Not only was there a notable power increase, I have realized a minimum of .5 MPG increase. If I could keep my foot out of the pedal, my MPG would definately be much better. I really liked these results because I could justify these modifications (and many more to come) to my wife. It would have been good to install each modification individually to measure the performance increase from each. Oh well...
I like the looks of the headers. Most modifications you do are not visible. But headers are looking good....
My next performance upgrade is a Holley 52 mm TB. I tried to install one last week but the Holley I received was defective and I had to send it back to be replaced (bad linkage). I should get the replacement tomorrow.
The word I get from Holley, Gibson and Hughes is that with the exhaust improvements that I've made (headers, 3" cat back), the TB upgrade will be the "best modification yet". I HOPE SO.
I haven't really done much else to my 5.9L so far. Other than the stuff already mentioned I have a 180 thermo, Bosch 4s, Jet2 and a drop in K&N.
I plan on an MSD ignition. I'm thinking about a shaker hood 'cause they looking so cool. Also 1.6/1.7 roller rockers, cam, etc.

Message: If you want a better effect for much less money just put a short belt on it for racing. I forgot that was something else I did to my 93 5.2, it only cost $6 and took about a minute to change. It bypassed the powersteering and A/C. It wouls be OK even cruising around as it runs the waterpump and alt. fine, just takes a little more muscle to turn. I can't remember how long it was, maybe I still have it in the garage...

Message: I did not notice any noise level increase with the header install. I have the 3" single side exhaust Gibson. It stays good and quiet until you give it mass quantities of air and fuel. Then.. She bangs.

Message: also, i've seen these in use on other cars and i know that certain applications involve the new pulley replacing the stock pulley AND the harmonic balancer. leaving the vehicle without a balancer. is that the case with our trucks?

Message: from a stock 45amp to a 70amp alternator.
since the amp is bigger from the stock one, would you consider it safe to underdrive the alternator pulley.
like slower rotation will be offset by higher amp rated alternator?
