Subject: Anyone run 12's w/ a 318 all motor?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 dak 318 5 spd. the truck only has 27000 miles on it and is mighty quick in stock form. I thought about a S/C but it is too expensive. Anyone have some mods i can do without doing major motor mods? I really dont want to mess with anything. I was thinking M1,PPH headers,24 lb inj, ported heads,52mm throttle body,MP PCM,K&N 14-2 1/2 round filter,Msd Ignition,Maybe some slicks. Any suggestions or has anyone tried this combination?

Haven't heard of any. Check out dragtruck.com, very inspiring for those who drag race.

I don't think you can get a 318 to run 12's without really diving into the engine. I think you would have to change the cam and have some extensive work on the heads to get a N/A 318 into the 12's. I also have a 97 318 with the auto, 3.90 LSD. I have edelbrock headers, IAT adjuster, 180 degree tstat, 1.7 roller rockers, flowmaster catback, accel coil, taylor wires, K&N 14x3 open air filter, and a transgo shift kit.
Realistically I expect I will get mid to high 14's out of this (depending on traction). Haven't been to the track with this combo yet.

Brad, you might do a little better than that...got a '93 4x2 sport std cab 318/3.90 rear, thorley headers, mopar PCM, K&N drop in filter, 3" exhaust w/flowmaster 40 series on gooodyear wrangler AP's (light truck all season tires, not traction friendly) and 150,000 miles on the odo. My best time at the local strip (traction and skill limited, had never tried anything like this before) was 15.1@90.

Three words "lots of grears" 4.56's and tall tires. You whould need to make 400+ hp. too. A 650 cfm on a M1 intake with 360 heads and 125hp nos. and your in the mid 12's with your stock 318 short block. LOL.

Don was LOL. I'm not really laughing cause I don't know about going 12's on all motor. That's going to take more than just bolt-ons. You're going to have to do serious head work, go with a full-race crank, con-rods, pistons, etc. Then you'll need lots of rear gear, traction help, and don't forget to put your truck on a diet. Anything you can do to shave the weight of the truck down will help. Take out the interior except for one race bucket seat, remove the carpet, seat belts, everything that's not race-oriented must go.

What I'm saying is, lots of guys are in the 13's with one or two power adders (nitrous, supercharger, etc.) but 12's on all motor with a 318 truck will cost a lot of money and prolly won't make for a good street driver.

I run 15.12s with mine. Does that count? Anyway, you will need more than 400 h.p. to get 12s. With all the work necessary you would be cheaper with the s/c and then you may not quiet get there.
