I have a single glasspack on mine and it doesn't sound anything like a glasspack on a car. It has a low rumble at cruising speeds and a low roar when you put your foot in it. Isn't there a cat after each manifold before the Y? And then a resonator or something after the Y? I just remember when I pulled the stock muffler (I hit a Racoon or something and trashed it) that the truck wasn't all that loud and obnoxious. So adding the glasspack isn't too bad - and it FLOWS!

If you want to know what glasspacks sound like just go down to the nearest trailer park and sit for 1/2 hour. Should hear plenty of them that way. Don't waste your money. One good muffler will outlast several glasspacks.

Hey, dont knock his idea. Glasspacks are a rodders friend. First they cost $25 compared to the $130 or so "popular" brands.

Who needs stainless anyway? Its not like were driving up and down beaches in our street trucks (4x4 owners excluded).

The biggest benifit for using a flow through muffler like that is you can install it backwards so the fins on the inside catch less air, thus louder and better flow.

And the cost difference? A glasspack might not last like a stainless but you can put one in every year and still save $.

Hell go buy one and slip it on without welding it, if it sounds bad, big whoop it was only $25.

Everyone thinks mufflers are the end all be all of a hot rod. The only reason they are so expensive and popular is that many "newer" cars out there cant be modded like good ol chevy and ford V8's used to be.

We are limited to parts we can use and mufflers are marketed for that reason. What extra power does a Magna flow have over a glasspack? I doubt its much if any. And if there is, its high end at the cost of tourqe.

Save your money peeps, and get the muffler that sounds good not looks good. You never even get to see the shiny ones.

I put one on my 98 dak i also have one on my 88 dak both 3.9s and I think they sound really good. The one on my 88 has been on there for about 10thousand miles or so and it has a nice low rumble to it. The one on my 98 is not broken in yet but it still sounds good. I think there worth the 20 bucks i paid for both of them. I just can't see spending 50 + buck on a muffler.

I have a 99 with a 5.2. I have a single glasspack with a dual outlet, with two stainless steel tips. The truck was that way when I bought it with 14000 miles, It now has close to 60k. I am constantly getting compliments every where I go on how great the truck sounds. I personally love it, it has a nice low rumble and sounds very mean.

Ida gone with glasspacks but ended up with a FLowtech afterburner for $50.

I wanted to get something in quickly for a meet, and I found the flowtech on the shelf at a parts store, woulda had to order something else, or pay out the butt for a muffler shop to weld one in.

Im very happy with it. Nice bubbly rumble to it. And I just clamped da bish on there.

I have dual exhaust on my old small block Chevy with Glass packs. My friend wants me to go to Flowmasters, but I still think my glass packs sound bad ass. And mine has no cats, just headers, glass packs and tail pipes.

Oh, by the way, it has 3 inch collectors from the headers but right after it's reduced down to 2 inches through the glass packs and all the way out the tail pipes yet has a nice rumble at an idle and gets wickedly LOUD when it is opened up. Dual exhaust with 3 inch pipes is rediculous, especially on STOCK engines.

My glass packs sound bad ass I think. You only WISH you could get a Dakota with emissions to sound close to that!

Here is where I change my tune. Sorry for having to say it but Ive never heard a V6 that sounded good with glasspacks.

There are some late model V6 cars that sound good though. The new 350Z for instance. And the old GN's did too. So its possible, but with what I dont know.

Some help I am, huh?

Honestly, I don't know of ANY V6 trucks that sounded good LOUDER.
I've ran glasspacks on MEAN V8's. But they usually sound SICK on a V6.
IMO a glasspack on a 3.9 will probably not sound too good. There are a few 3.9 Dakota's in my area (lowered to look like R/T's) that sound like sh*t.

I'd go with FLowmaster or something before a glasspack. Sad thing is you wont know until you try. I put a Flowmaster on our FWD V6 (wifes car we used to have) and it sounded like sh*t. I had to try diff setups like 3 times to make it not sound too GAY. That's my own experience.

I personally don't like the sound of a six with any open flowing exhaust. But most V-8's sound much better with a nice 'PAIR' of glass packs on a true dual system. My truck gets compliments nearly every time I pull into a store or parking lot from someone about how 'EVIL' it sounds.

Do you pick up any power with a glasspack? I was thinking about putting on a Gibson cat-back, single side swept outlet on my 4.7L. But if I can slap a glasspack on....... any suggestions?

Most quiet mufflers have some type of packing like glasspacks do, but these are open straight through like Gibson or magnaflow or whatever.

So you either have a straight through chambered or a striaght through glasspack. Both of them you can drop a tennis ball through.

What made the glasspacks popular years ago was that you can install them backwards so the fins cant catch the exhaust flow. So it doesnt matter if theres packing in it or not.

Glasspacks sound good on the dak. I have a highflow cat and the truck had flowmasters and 3 1/2" tips on it when I got it. I kinda lost the exhaust system from the cat back during a baja run and loved the sound. I had the glasspacks put on and 4" tips. Much louder, meaner sounding. They get louder as they break in too. You can also heat the outside with a torch and the drop it in water and it'll be like haveing a big chamberpipe. I later cut it back off and have headers, y pipe, cat, then nothing for like a year and some change now. Sounds hella mean.

What are your ages ? I would bet in the 16-25 group. A muffler DOES NOT break in, it is the fibreglass packing burning out. You want an attention getter (cops) by all means get a glass pack and see who gets singled out.
A glass pack is a domestic version of a ricer fart can.

I have had glasspacks on a 4.3L V6 and to my suprise they actually sounded better than I thought. But after I sold that truck, I have bought Flowmaster Mufflers and man is there a change. On a 98 Chevy Z-71 (5.7L) I ran true duals with two 40 Series Delta Flows to 2 2.5" pipes to 3.5" tips. They sounded great, but my 4.7L Dakota with the exact same config minues the true duals/mufflers sounds a hell-of-a-lot better. I dunno why a 5.7L vs. a 4.7L without true duals/mufflers doesn't sound better. I mean this motor just sounds wicked with this setup. I have rode in a lot of trucks and cars with aftermarket exhaust, and I would have to compare this truck to sounding more like a V8 sports car (camaro, or something along those lines). I think this motor was just built from the factory begging for an exhaust.
