Subject: Bad Cat on new 4.7 - HELP IP: Logged
Message: My other post didn't get any hits so I'm gonna try this new title. The exhaust on my 4.7 is extremely quiet. If you put your ear next to the tailpipe it is still very hard to tell that it is running. There is also almost no pressure coming out of the tailpipe. All of the pipe in front of the 3-way cat (the one just in front of the muffler) glows red. It seems to me that that 3-way cat is defective. I could be wrong because I have never had a vehicle with a 3-way cat or stainless exhaust but I am still pretty worried. I'm not to worried about them fixing the cat because that can be easily replaced. I'm worried about what kind of wear it put on my engine if it is bad. I only have 220 miles but maybe it put 5000 miles worth of wear on my rings due to the extreme backpressure. Surely this engine puts out more air than that. Maybe this is normal for the 2001 but a friends 2000 with a 4.7 sounded pretty good from the factory. Mine sounds like an electric car. Is this normal or is my cat bad?

Message: I would have the dealer check it out as soon as possible. The thing i would be most concerned about is the pipe gowing red. That is some serious heat for that to happen and it should not be getting that hot. Sounds like the cat or maybe the muffler is not flowing right.

Message: I said in my post that the pipe glows red. Actually, the pipe is discolored like it has glowed red. It has a redish brown color. It may just be the way stainless looks after a few hundred miles. I have never had stainless exhaust before so I don't know.

Message: Yea stainless gets a blusih red color to it after its been used and eventually develops a slight surface rust. But I dont know how loud your trucks supposed to be Id take it to the dealer and have them check it out maybe listen to another dak while your there to see if there just jerking your chain or not.

Message: Glowing red is normal. Catalysts that neutralize unburnt fuel tend to get pretty warm. It doesn't sound right that you get no air flow. One test you can do is wait until your truck is cold and bang the heel of your hand on the cat. A bad cat will rattle. That doesn't mean that it isn't bad just because it doesn't. I would still take it in to the dealer since the cats are warranted for 80K miles no matter what. These cats with all the pre-cats are a PITA!
