Message: It has happened once again. Picture this, me in my 93 4x4 reg. cab, long bed Dakota w/318 and 102,000mi. My freind in his 99 ex-cab Frontier Dessert Runner(2WD) w/3.3 V6 Stick. We pull up to a light and he gets off the line and then a good truck and a half length in front of me before we have to brake. I'll admit my reflexes were a bit slow and I didnt mash the gas. What are a few mods(under $500) that I could do to get more torque and also more top end speed? Someone please help me!!!

Not the '99 Frontiers.
As for the $500:
Hughes Engines Stage-1 TB and replace the factory muffler with a good aftermarket muffler (Dynomax or Flowmaster for cost savings...but they're still excellent picks). Change the O2 sensor as well to "freshen up" the readings to the PCM.
That'll cost total about $500.

Message: hey Berndt, when you say "freshen up" the PCM, do you mean get a chip? If so that wouldnt be an option because I hear you must run a high octane gas(92orhigher) and with premium gas going for $1.89-1.92 per gallon here in northern California, it would break me.

Message: First thing I'd do is Intake and Exhaust. A K&N filter and a cat back exhaust. That'll run you about $350. Then, do your plugs and t-stat. The O2 sensor won't buy you power unless it's in bad enough shape to cause you to lose power. Then a new one will gain you back what you lost. It won't be much. It'll probably help your MPG though.

On the "freshen up" part, no. O2 sensors normally last about 60K miles and then start to degrade performance slowly. If your O2 is over 60K miles, it would be best to change it out.
Ron, forgot about the intake system...cost is about $40. As for the O2 not increasing performance...you'd be surprised on how much they take away. A simple tuneup is good for up to 15HP...with a bad O2 (running either too lean or too rich, about 20HP).

On the 3.9/5.2/5.9L engines, the 3923's work very well. As for the 4.7L engines, there's mixed results.
