Subject: What more can I do? IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys, (and girls)
OK, this is my question. I have a 1990 Dak, 2wd, 3.9L V6, 3.21 gears. I want to improve my HP as much as possible. I have lifted the truck with 3in Body lift and a 2in suspension lift. I now run 31x10.50s. So this pulls away from my power alot.
For the completed mods. I have made a homwbrew cold air intake using 3in tubing and a K&N cone filter. I also have edlebrock headers, Flowmaster dual exhaust, and have cut the CAT off, and disconected the smog system, and Jacobs coil.
What other mods can I undertake that would help out HP and torque? I want to get a Jacobs ignition system, underdrive pullies, and a new colling fan.
Thanks for your input and Have a good one!

Message: Best mod you could do is change to 3.92 gears. It will be like a new truck.

Message: CW, when changing to 3.92 gears, I know the truck would "seem" to have more power. But it simply has a lower gear ratio. But would it effect my gas milage really bad? I want to beef up my Dak but I also drive alot to college. And about how much does this installation cost. I know the gears are about $100.00.
Oh and, in the future, I want to get a set of 3in lift spindles to run 33x12.50's, would a 3.92 gear ratio be sufficient to trun these tires?
Thanks alot CW.

Message: The 3.92's would be the best improvment you could make considering the tire size. It's usually a better bang for the buck than most engine mods.

Message: Yup...I ran with 32" BFG's on my '97 (3" Suspension/2" Body lift) with 4.10:1 gears. The 3.90:1 are perfect for 31" tires. (Definitely a must with larger tires.)

Message: I have no idea what it would cost to get gears installed the shouldn't charge over 6 hours labour. Go around and get some estimates from shops and see. I wouldn't be a bit surprized if the gas milage would go up since you have 31" tires on.

Message: You want to get more horses and save money at the same time? It isn't impossible but I suggest that you get the degree first, get the good job that goes with it, and THEN play with your truck. On the other hand, it can't be as expensive as chasing coeds.
Just telling you what your daddy would say if you asked him!

Message: Thanks Bill55, let me guess, you are 55 years old right? just messen with ya. See us youngens tend to do really stupid things, like spend every dime we get on trucks. I dont do just that but I do spend alot of my cash on my Dak.
I dont expect to get both big HP and have the truck be gas efficient at the same time. I just dont want to do something like a gear change and drop my already bad gas milage even worse. Thata it.
I want to do the gear change but I dont want to act on a whim and wish I had waited until I get my 33's. So I think I will look into this now and get a better picture of what it includes. Other than a gear change, what would you guys recomend?
Thanks alot for your help.

Message: You think you get bad gas mileage with v6 3.9l??? Try a 4.7 v8. 12 miles to the gallon max. And thats going down hill!

Message: I think I get about 14-15 mpg now. Not cool for a V6 Man. But that does suck that you only get little milage.

Message: V8 getting worse gas mileage than the V6? If I'm not mistaken, I thought at the WORST, the V8 got the SAME as the V6, and in many cases I've heard that the V8 got BETTER mileage. But then again, I've heard a wide array of things. I've heard that some people get like 11 MPG w/their V6's.

Message: 12 mpg!?! Man thats horrible. I have to floor it through every stop light in Ft. Myers to get that kind of milage. With th 4.7L and 3.92's I still average around 17mpg.

Message: I am trying to get that up. I think that one reason my MPG is bad is simply due to the trucks age. And the fact that I have 31 in tires, though not huge, are alot heavier than the 27 iners that are stock. Plus they are wider too. I also do alot of in town running, like CThomp said, stop light to stop light. I tend to drive fast and play some here and there too. haha.
But I guess it is like another Dak owner once said, "You dont drive a truck for gas milage!". That is so true!
Have a good Christmas everyone!
