Subject: BIG Block 440 install IP: Logged
Message: I got a Big Block Wedge 440 waiting to be unleashed ripped from an old cuda. Need to know what kind of problems anyone has run into on the install. So has anyone been in this situation.
The dyno has the engine making 1+hp to 1ci without a blower or turbo so far. Being street legal isn't a issue at the moment.
Vehicle is a 97-up GenIII Dakota RC
Suspension and everything will be upgraded with time.
$10,000 truck plus a $7,000 modded big block means PERFORMANCE!

Message: Your biggest problem is going to be traction.Would probably look into back-halfing it or using a set of superstock springs with your stock main leaf. Also look into an 8 3/4 or a Dana because an 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 probably won't last long behind a decent 440. If streetability isn't a concern then 550-600hp is easily reached with a good RB motor.

Message: I'm doing a .040 over stoked 400. With a TF727 and an 8 3/4 rear end on leaf springs. Schumacher in Seattle is where I'm getting the install kit. If you want headers you'll have to have them fabbed..I just bought a set of 62-65 B-body mainfolds that will work for the conversion. Mine is slowly coming together. Should be a really fun ride!! Shoot me and email and maybe we can help each other through the process!!

Message: what would the cost of putting in something like a 440 into a 2000 v6er? i guess that's two questions in itself...1) how much for the engine and all parts 2) estimate of shop install.
thanks

Message: shop costs would kill you on that one !
a "good" motor can be built for around 3 grand.
this would be something that would run easy 12s in a close to stock form.
i have run 12.04 in a 3,400 lb 1968 gtx with a 440
that is all stock block/pistons/heads. only a little .509" cam and 4.10 gears. the car is obviously 500 lbs lighter than stock.
by contrast my 94 dakota std cab shortbed 5.2 auto. weighed 3640 lbs without me in it and only a quarter tank of gas (it ran 13.80s-no nitrous or blower)
a decent rebuildable 440/727 combo shouldnt set you out of more than a grand, i see them for 500-800 dollars fairly often.

Message: Hey Guys, I too am dropping a stroked 400 into a 90 Dakota Mopar Express truck. I have talked to the people @ www.engine-swaps.com and they have answered a bunch of questions for me.
They have a kit with no holes to drill in the frame that gives you the:
Engine mounts
Tranny mounts - TF727
Oil pan and pick up - Milodon (can only get this pan from Schumacher/engine-swaps.com)
Headers - Custom made units only.
Exhaust Manifolds - 62-65 B-Body manifolds work pefectly. I got a pair for 100 bucks.
(Schumacher says he'll sell you a set for $135 = shipping.)
I would love to get email from anyone else who is doing this swap or wants to do it. I will help or hopfully someone can answer my questions too.
jeffaki@bellsouth.net
I think right now my biggest worry is all of the electrical conversions that have to take place.
Also, getting the speedometer correct.
I have a 8 3/4 narrowed rear end but what about a drive shaft. (I think I'm gonna have to get a custom one made)
I think my plate will read:
CAREATR

Message: I am about to start this project. I am going to use the Schumacher kit on a 440. I got a very clean '87 shortbed with a 4cyl, 5sp. power brakes, but manual steering. What are you guys doing for radiators? I know I wil have a few more issues using the shorter front ended '87, any suggestions? It will be a 727/8.75 rear.

Message: Us big block conversion guys should meet. I have a stroked 383 thats allready in the process of going in my 92 sport dakota. Check the
engine-swaps page out. You'll find that with the kit its pretty easy to do. you just have to be invested. I can tell you that exhaust is the biggest problem. you have to go with manifolds and most all mopar fans know that theres a lot of power to be made or lost in exhaust. also you wont have power brakes unless you use a stock cam.

Message: I'm gonna buy a crate engine soon. Anyway I'm running a v6 3.9L and I'm not sure what to get.
So maybe you guys can help me decide?
Well anyway what do you think would be better to get a 5.9L r/t engine or a 340?
Also which one would have better gas mileage?

If you are worried about your gas mileage, i wouldnt be doing an engine swap with more cubic inches.

Message: "First there were overhead valve engines and flatheads. In the 1950s, Chrysler manufactured a hemispherical head V8, called simply, the Hemi. These were very expensive to manufacture, so Chrysler came up with a polyspherical head V8, called the Poly or Semi-Hemi.
In 1958 they designed a wedge-shaped head that offered great performance without the cost of a Hemi. This was obviously called the Wedge and is still produced today.
In 1962, Dodge and Plymouth offered the 413 cubic inch Maximum Performance Wedge, nicknamed Max Wedge. The engine was enlarged to 426 c.i. for 1963 and 1964. Max Wedges dominated drag racing and even competed successfully against the Chrysler 426 Hemi, introduced in 1964. The fact that they are still competitve in Super Stock classes, 40 years after their introduction, is impressive.
Bottom line, if a 1962-64 Dodge or Plymouth pulls up next to you at a light, be careful. If there's a Max Wedge lurking under the hood, you might see nothing more than taillights when the light turns green. Their outward appearance is Plain-Jane; no stripes, no badging. With the exception of the hood scoop on some '63 and '64 models, there is no tip-off to distinguish a Max Wedge from Grandma's slant-six grocery-getter. But make no mistake, Max Wedges can embarrass a brand-new Viper. They are fully capable of 12-second quarter mile times in stock trim. That's fast enough to pick off most motorcycles."
This info came from http://maxwedge.com
I don't know for sure but it says nothing about a 440 size.
