My '89 Dak just started backfiring (big time) through the exhaust when I let off the gas. No computer codes come up when checked and everything seems ok on the shop analyzer. Someone has suggested that the air dump valve on the air pump may not be working right. Help!! It's so bad it destroyed my muffler.

Any ideas or guidance??

Appreciate the input.

Found the problem. It was a failed air solenoid. Seems that when this thing isn't working the air pump keeps pumping air into the exhaust when de-accellerating. Not good since this sets up a highly explosive mixture.

Note: this doesn't show up on the engine check light codes.

Thanks to......

Sure,

There are three solenoids (on the '89) located on the passenger side valve cover toward the firewall. They sit in a row and have an electrical connection and a vacuum connector that has three vacuum tubes going to it.

On the '88 they are color coded red, green and blue.

The immediate fix for my problem was to remove the belt from the air pump and disconnect the air switching solenoid. It's a dealer part and I'll have to wait until I have time to get to the dealership.

Doing this means you're not supplying smog pump air to the exhaust but that's a lot better than blowing up your exhaust.

Hope this helps.

Daniel
