Message: I had my 95 Dakota Sport with the 3.9 detailed to remove another season of Michigan salt off of it. When I went to pick up the truck it wouldn't start. Had it towed home for now. No spark at the plugs and no voltage at the two wire connector at the ignition coil. I swapped the relays to see if that was the problem. Engine cranks okay. I know how to use a digital volt meter, would like a hint as where to look for potential problems. Took the underhood fuse panel apart and found a fusible like scotch-locked between two wires, that can't be factory? Any help is greatley appreciated. Thanks!

Message: Local guy told me to open the wiring harness that runs from the underhood fuse panel to behind the washer jar. I found a severely corroded connector that has four red and white(?)wires linked together. I cut that out and soldered the wires together, the truck started. Later on in the day I tried to go for a quick road test and the truck won't start again!

Message: Spanky, I had a 94 with a similar problem if I remember correctly. I kept poping fusible links in the charging system which would not let the truck start but all other accessories would work. First I checked the starter solenoid because I had problems with chrysler starters on those darn 3.0L v6's. Nope. Actually, I found it by mistake and burned my hand on a bare wire in the wire loom just behind the cruise control housing near the fire wall. Repaired the wire which was a dead short, wrapped the harness in a plastic coke bottle and electrical tape. Never had the problem again. If you want details on the starter solenoid.....just ask. Also, I don't want to seem stupid, but check for corrosion on the battery terminals....this was a common problem on cars that sit outside alot or are in corrosive climates up north.
Now that I think about it.....we used to experience problems with the ignition switches on 90-96 model Chryslers as well. Not as common though. If you are wondering, I used to own a repair shop so hopefully I can shed some light for folks.
I am pretty new to the forum but I like it alot already. I used to be part of the SVT cobra owners forum and the information exchange was priceless.

Message: Thanks for the reply! Didn't have time to work on the truck yesterday but did go out and try to start it. It starts, runs for a few seconds then shuts itself down. There has to be water intrusion in the pcm or distributer. Maybe another warm day of sitting with the hood open will cause it to fix itself!

Message: My dak did that and ended up being what your local guy said. Except my wires were to severely corroded gray wires. It happened one other time and it turned out to be the main ground on the drivers side fender. For some reason my truck has alot of wiring problems:)

Message: Spent a couple hours on the little pig today. Took the harness apart and found two more severely corroded terminals, cut them out, soldered in new connectors, and have the same problem. Took the cap, rotor, and hall effect switch to blow out the dist. with compressed air. Same problem!! This thing will start if it feels like it and run for awhile then just shut down. What's the best way to test the crank sensor? I'm hoping the crank sensor calfed and not the ecm. Ideas?

Message: Wayne, yes the name is from A&M.
I also had a problem on the 94 that it would start, run and then die. Sometimes not start but it would crank.
Will you Dak crank and just not fire?
If so, research the screen and fuel filter. I have always wanted to see or hear of someone doing it as I believe it is in the tank. I think you are dealing with something possibly impossible to find without alot of tedious work.

Message: I had this problem also. Mine turned out to be the fuel pump. I almost went insane. Go under the truck and hit the gas tank with a dead blow hammer while the key is on to see if the pump kicks in. It is worth a try.

Message: Finally fixed this thing! After testing every electrical gadget in the truck I went back to the basics and found a totally worn out timing chain. The truck has 135K on it after all. Now it fires right up, idles smooth, and runs as good as new! Thanks to all that offered help.
