Message: My '99 5.2 CC Sport Plus Dakota (which cost me less then 19K with tax and license) has never been back to the dealer since I've owned it (over three years). In that time, a neighbor bought a Tacoma V6, and has had to have...one head gasket replaced, one front engine seal leak fixed, and one dead alternator..all in less then two years. So, I guess he got a real bargain, right?
Oh, did I mention his truck cost him almost 23K?
You see, SirLexus, jealousy is a matter of perspective. Talk to us a few years from now, when you are busy counting rust spots and holes on your Taco...oh, and please don't get in an accident, as in the real world, Tacos fold up pretty bad.
American Trucks are still the best built in the world. Even the lowliest Phord will still be on the road long after your Toy has gone to the scrap yard.

Message: I will begin to answer born2steel's question on previus post. (Italy) and the first high rev little engines(Germany) and not Japan. Japan was the "rich kid" that could buy german and russian technology, but that is all they were. I love the technology on imports, nevertheless even they are not exempt from producing lemon cars with the exeption of Roll Royce. That should take care of the "who spend more time in the shop argument". Next comment is for all of us in this forum and the occasional intruder with defferent brand auto. If you want a superfast car, buy a formula-1; if you want a supertowing vehicle, buy a Kenworth rig; if you want a superall-terrain vehicle, buy an Hummer. The point is that you bought a certain type of vehicle for a purpose and as long it gets the job done, be happy with it.You don't have to worry if is the best vehicle out there or not because there is not such thing. When we bought our vehicles, we knew what were buying(if we were buying smart)so this goes to the complainers !deal with it!. Amen
P.S. just my opinion and should be taken just as that. good driving everyone!

Message: About a year ago I was running down the freeway and saw this red truck coming up behind me pretty fast. There was some traffic in front of me so he got right on my tail. I was kind of ticked he had gotten so close, so when the traffic cleared I gave the vette all it had, and the Tacoma stayed on my ass. I pulled into the right lane and the guy shot by me. He wanted to do a rolling go, so we went for it again up to around 100, and he pulled me. He said it was supercharged. Very impressive! I have a 4.7 Dakota and I know it would not have had a chance. It is quick off the line, but does not have the punch the vette does at freeway speed.

Message: All I can say is..what a slow Vette you have!
For argument's sake, lets look at the claims these bozos are making. A Tacoma, a stripped one, regular cab, no options...weighs just over 3000 lbs, empty. Lets say that it has 300 hp (which I doubt).
That's 10 lbs. per horsepower. Now, they claim it runs 12's.
Take an F-Body, with an LS-1. Better aerodynamics, more torque, better weight distribution. etc. It weighs in at 3400 lbs, and has 345 HP. Thats slightly better then the Tacoma boys claim. Yet, it takes a bit of effort, driving skill, and what not, for it to run consistant 12s.
Someone's telling a big lie....

Message: Take a look at any site dealing with Tacomas and those HP numbers and times are completely possible. Fact of the matter is a s/c 3.4L will whoop on many many trucks out there. The one guy that said throw that engine in a 4000lb truck and see how it does. Now what kinda idiot would do that? Are you just embarrassed that a little truck like that can beat yours because it has less displacement and weights about 1000lbs less than yours? I think you're whining. I'll take a blown Tacoma with almost 300hp and still has 20-23mpg rather than a huge v8 4.7 with about 15-17mpg N/A. And it won't get any better blown either. Take a look at this straight from MT dyno. Tested right after install before the computer had time to tune itself. http://www.minitruckinweb.com/tech/0207mt_blowhard29_zoom.jpg It's sad to see 2.4L 4banger Tacomas beating V8 Dakotas and Rams on a daily basis. You guys just go around bashing things you have no information on to back up your stuff. Sure Tacomas have problems just like any other vehicle, but at least its reliable. I've had friends own Dodges, Chevys, and Fords and for the most part I've seen em in the shop more than on the street. Just a plain fact. Sure some of those trucks may not have any problems at all, but MORE often than not, they do. I guess it's just the idea that a small truck with 300hp can realistically run a mid-high 13s, while your loaded, heavy ass big displacement truck can't, without putting more $$ into it than a Vette payment...

Message: Kry, you'te forgetting that it's all preference. I can out tow and out haul you, blah blah. Big deal. People choose vehicles because it suits them. It's called marginal decision making. My Dakota has more utility to me than a Tacoma would, so I bought that. That is called the Duh Factor.
While you might be able to build a fast truck out of your Tacoma, it still wouldn't suit any of the people here.
To be truthful, I loved the Tacoma before I looked into the Dakota. I test drove it and everything. Ready to buy it, right there. Then I remembered what I friend told me way back. I should look into Dakotas, I would really like them, they are fast and beefy. So I did. Without a doubt, it suited me better. Did I buy the Tacoma? Hell no, not when there is a better choice.
I still like the Tacoma though, I am still a big Toyota fan. Something else just suited me better.

truck that can tow, haul and be fast, or a mini
truck that can haul a lawnmower and leaf
blower, and struggle up the hills. I bought a
truck cause I wanted/needed a truck. If I
wanted to go fast I would have invested in a
stang GT and beat the piss out of all the stock
trucks. fact is, I use my truck everyday to haul
around furniture, hence the word "truck". I
owned a 98 s-10, it was tiny, and I hate to
break it to you, but my brothers tacoma is just
as small, very unpractical and unsafe if you
ask me. If your friggin taco is so well built,
why dont you check the safety ratings on
Edmunds.com, and see just how badly the
tacoma did. I wouldnt put my fiancee or my
nephew in a tin can like that if you paid me.

What are you talking about? All I need to get my 360 into the mid 13's is $500. It's a little something called NX. Lets see $14000 for truck and 500 for NX...hmmm...nowhere near a Vette payment.
D,
I saw a GT 5-speed on slicks in Fontana run a 14.6 1/4. A black single cab R/T ran a 14.7 on stock tires, but it did have intake and exhaust work. I think you'll need a better example to whip on stock trucks. ;)

Message: Ok.... 100lbs means .1 in the quarter, so 1000 lbs less, should run a full second quicker, just based on weight.
Secondly, a blown v6 gets 22mpg someone said.... well my NA 4.7 gets 21 highway with just 4000 miles on it, I'm not impressed.
So, who really cares about these Tacos? MPG doesn't impress me, 1/4 miles times don't impress me, and I can out tow, out payload, and, being 7 feet tall, I can DRIVE my truck, unlike the taco! And, Krystaco.... since when is a 289 a "huge" V8????

even 23mpg isn't much of a difference when I consider that I can outtow a 3.4 with a couple cylinders misfiring probably :)
If ALL you wanted was to go fast, get a sports car, that's what they do.
If you wanna save on gas, and go fast, buy a small import and build it up.
If you wanna be able to haul things, tow, pull people out of ditches, etc, buy a truck.
Now, you guys are bragging on nothing but speed....which category SHOULD you be in of those three? "I got a truck to go fast"....just doesn't sound right.
Let's bring the Hemi commercial to life. Have a 4.7L towing a trailered honda civic, and a 3.4L taco towing a trailered honda civic, line up and go from a stop. Then let's see who brags :D

Message: I'm right in the middle of buying my 3rd Tacoma 4x4, which is why I stumbled across this old thread while researching superchargers and such.
My first 2 4x4 Taco's were leased and left bone stock, and out of a cummulative 68,000 miles (33k on the '97 & 35K on the '00) NEITHER of them needed any sort of repair what-so-ever... and I have been very hard on both of them.
Each time I go looking for a new truck, I DO consider the Dakota for its larger size, V8 and a better ride..... and then I remember the day that my neighbor, Jesse, and his fairly new 4x4 Dakota broke down right in the middle of the shallow ditch that runs between his house and mine. If I remember right, his transmission would not obey the column shifter. That was my fair warning on the Dakota's... It was a pretty pathetic display of reliability and value in general.
My new Taco, which is in the middle of a dealer trade as of this moment, is an ext.cab, 5spd, 3.4L, TRD 4x4... but this time I'm buying instead of leasing, and I have the TRD Supercharger built into the price. ($25,800)
After 6 years of beating the snot out of my first two Tacoma's without a single failure of any kind, I figure I'd be just plain foolish to buy anything OTHER than a new Tacoma.
Side Note - BOTH of my $0-down LEASED Taco's early trade-in bid's were more than I owed on them.... Try getting out of a zero-down Dakota Lease early and the words "Resale Value" will ring loudly in your ears as you drive away from the dealership in your old truck.
You cant go wrong with a Tacoma. Period.
