Message: Andrew,
Chevy had 3 V8's in those years. A 305 (5.0), a 350 (5.7) and the 454 (7.4 i believe) the 454 is only avaialbe in the heavy duties. The most commom gear ratio's were 3.73. I think they also had a 3.93 also but don't qoute me on that

Message: The older Chevy engines were really weak stock. If I remember correctly, the 350 was rated at 210 hp. The later years were more like 230 or so hp. The full size 4x4 Chev is a heavier truck than the Dakota, so you should be able to take a stock Chevy with a 5.2, in equivalent running condition. By the way, the Z71 is just a suspension and skidplate package, nothing different in the driveline. The other post was correct, 1/2 tons are mostly 3.73 rears, with an option of a 3.9x. Now, the newer Chevys with the 5.3 litre will probably give a good run to the 4.7s, but that is just a guess.

Message: Just a short story to add to the thread...
Im in a '99,5.2,CC,4X4 W/3.93, Gibson Cat Back & K&N intake, Underdrive pulley and Stage 2 chip, exiting the freeway, when I notice a few females in a brand new Z71 at the stoplight next to me(Must have been Daddy's). She looks over, throws some revs, and it's on! I had her by more than a truck length before the next block, untill a bus
turned in front of me and I had to let her pass.
At the next light she yells "What do you have in there? You just smoked me!" I smiled and said "Just a 318" I was blown away when she said she had a 454! Granted, my truck was not stock (and does have a shell on the back also) but she had a 454!

Message: Not dogging Chebby's or anything... but I really don't take their HP claims to heart. I believe they are inflated... I mean, come on. A 230ish hp Dak can smoke a 285hp chebby with ease, and now I read that the weight difference is less than 400 lbs. I just have no faith in their trucks.
Wait a minute, I am dogging chebby's! hahahaha
seems to me, that where I just moved from (Monroe, La) there were TONS of z71's and 4x2 GM trucks, and most people put exhaust and a programer on them and think they are fast. Well, they SOUND fast, but that is bout it hehehehe
my paw n law has a 96 (pre vortec) 3/4 ton GM reg cab with the 454 and auto... it sux as far as speed.. oh, and gas too
My old roomie had a 96 306 ext cab with exhaust, filter, and power programmer and was always talking about beating anything on the road. Well, he gets a Gtech and says "now we will know what our trucks run, no more excuses" so I ask him one day if he ever used it "yeah, but it isn't right.. it was telling me I run low 16's" hahahhahah well, I put it on my truck and run mid 15's! hmmmmmm. needless to say, we never raced :(
sheesh, sorry for the long post. back to the subject.. you should smoke him

Message: I try to spend as much time at the drag races as possible. Lately i've noticed a large amount of Dakota's and Chevy's. Now here is how it plays out. The Dakota's i've seen were making quarter mile passes between 15.9 and 16.4 seconds. The chevys i've seen were making quarter mile passes between 15.8 and 16.2. All of these trucks had minor mods done to them (exhaust, programmer, ect)
Now these quarter mile times are very close so if you are smokin chevy's in a Dakota whoever is driving the chevy is either not trying to race you are they just don't know how to drive. Another problem that chevy has done with there new trucks is put a tall tire with a high gear. These trucks will do 80mph and only turn 1900 rpms. Alot of chevy owners are re-gearing this trucks to give them more bottom end. Most are going from the stock 3.42 gear to a 4.10 gear. Which is making these trucks run in the low 15 sec area. Other mods that chevy owners are doing is puting a 2500 stall converter because of the weak low end of the 5.3 litre motor. There is a guy in Baton Rouge Louisiana that has a 5.3 2WD regular cab that runs 14.15 sec in the quarter @ 98mph. All he has done is put a set of sticky mickey's 4.10 gear and a 2500 stall. It woke this truck up Big Time. I have to admit that he beat my Dakota on the first race. The next time i ran himi sprayed 125HP shot on my truck and was able to pass him. My truck ran 13.90 sec @ 101MPH. If he was to spray his truck there is no doubt in my mind that he would beat me. Almost makes me want to go buy a chevy pickup especially to spend about $1500 and be able to beat any stock camaro's and mustangs with a full size pickup

Message: Just last month I went for a T/O on the Wichita KS Raceway. My 01 R/T RC was lined up with a Black Corba and this new Sliverado Z71 RC was behind me. I almost took on the Corba! Of course it missed a shift. Plus my Truck only had 5k on the motor and all stock! Anyways every one was dog slow that day! My point is that Z71 only drop a 16.7 1/4 time! I can't say I did that well either, but I had more than a good second better time than that Z71. In fact I had the fastest truck out there! Now that's sad! I hope that new F&B 50mm TB and the K&N cold intake makes an improvement :) I'll have to go racing again once I get that! Does anyone know how long it takes to get my order from Speedtweaks? I just ordered it yesterday threw the internet.

Message: The Chevys with 454 blocks are in much of the same predicament as us R/T owners when it comes to running at or near stock: Our engines weren't built for sheer horsepower, they were built for mountains of torque for applications such as towing - the 454 engine is a marine (boat) block that gets modified for truck use.
The reason the 4.7's/4.6's/5.7's of the world typically beat these bigger vehicles for acceleration (besides the obvious transmission differences) is because they were designed to different specifications. The moment any 454/360 owner starts upgrading their parts for the track they're going to absolutely smoke those smaller-engined vehicles.

Message: I've been surfing the internet for a few years, reading topics from dodge, chevy and ford sites. Something very interesting I've noticed (and you will too, if you ever leave the security of your biased sites) is that all ford and dodge sites are always comparing themselves to Chevy vehicles, especially the "Z71". If you go surfing around, you'll even notice that alot of 2 wheel drive sport trucks compare themselves to the "Z71". I finally found out why! The Z71 is an awesome vehicle! I've always been a dodge fan, up until the point that I actually crawled out of my little "blanket of denial" and test-drove the fords and Chevies. I couldn't believe the Chevy! There is no comparison. The chevy was so much more comfortable and it felt stronger and tighter than the Ford or the Dodge. The Dodge Ram has a tight feel too, but it's more of a "bumpy" tight, like the shocks are welded or something. I'll be changing my name because I bought a 2002 Z71 about 8 months ago, but I wanted to keep my surfing name of "Ram7" for a while so that people would recognize me and relate to all of the pro-dodge memos I've submitted in the past. The reason it was "Ram7" is because I've had 7 Dodge Ram trucks in the past 15 years. The last two I had (both brand new) kept having transmission trouble that Dodge couldn't fix. I strongly suggest to anyone who thinks Dodge or ford are better trucks than Chevy, Go (with an unbiased mind) and test drive a Chevy. New or used you'll see That the "z71" is a superior vehicle and that is probably the reason they are being compared to so often. I love mine! Off-road it's aggressive and agile. On the highway it rides smooth and quiet. I'm not trying to say that Ford and Dodge don't make nice trucks, because I still like the ride and looks of them (especially the look of the new Ram). I'm just saying that you can't touch a Chevy Z71 with the competition. It's an awesome vehicle!

Yep, I'd say Dodge was "different" all-right.....most manufacturers design there transmissions to move the vehicle forward when it's placed in "drive"... not 15 minutes later. I've been a dodge fan for a long time and I'm telling everyone... nothing can touch a Z71. Time to get out of your little, undersized toy Dakotas and step into a full size truck.
