Message: I made my homemade intake using a 3" Fernco 90 rubber fitting from the throttle body and a piece of 6 1/4" PVC pipe from the Fernco fitting to the stock air box,and 1 3" Fernco coupling. Worked great, total cost about $15.
I can definately feel the difference and mileage did go up from 17 city to 18 and freeway from 18 to bout 20.
Good Luck

Message: I used 3" ABS piping to build mine. I never had a problem with it during the summertime, the heat didn't affect it at all.
You can see it at www.geocities.com/intense79/
I'm now designing a new intake using 3" exhaust pipe, using the stock airbox.

Message: Josh, sorry i don't have any pics, the Fernco fittings are black and i sprayed the PVC semi- gloss, And hell the Fernco fittings even come with the stainless steel screw clamps.
It fits perfect with the length of PVC, 6 1/4 ", I still use the factory air box and filter, but i am looking for a K&N.
No problems with clearance of linkage etc....

Message: I was having a hard time finding ABS pipe and fittings at the Hardware store or lumber yard. If you find it hard to find these parts, try lookin at the RV dealer in your area, thats where I finally found the fittings and pipe, the fernco was a pretty common item though. I am using a RC-2530 K&N filter, what is everyone eles using. (REAL tight fit on 3" ABS pipe)

Message: The cone K&N filters have a rubber sleeve with clamp on the end specifically to fit on a 3" pipe. Sounds like you are talking about the kind that drops in the stock box.

Message: The air hat is considered somewhat restrictive, but it's an issue of degrees and how important they are to you. The 4.7 has a wider range of intakes that connect directly to the TB due to its placement, the 3.9 for the most part, usually keeps the hat. The K&N FIPK is one of the only intakes that don't make use of the existing air hat for 3.9 & 5.9. There are so many varieties of intakes, all with websites: K&N, 360 airintakez, AirRaid, Volante, Quick D, Intense Performance etc. as well as all the homebrews. Do a search on this board and read all the posts, there are enough of them with enough info to answer just about any questions.

Message: Thanks, all i used was a RE-0920 K&N filter, 12inch length of 3 inch ABS pipe, 45 degree street elbow and one of those 3 inch rubber coulpers. The air hat is the same one that came with my truck. That blue prefilter, they gave me free when i bought the filter.

Message: jj, Why would you remove a perfectly fine 90 degree bend, (the air hat) and replace it with a 90 degree bend??? Am I missing something here???

Message: hey guys! Been looking at my stock 97, 5.2 intake system. Heck! it's just thin plastic to begin with! I dont think ABS or PVC will be affected by heat if you use the stock hat. The hat itself doesn't look too restrictive, but the factory flexible hoses have got to go!! I also plan to make a heat shield out of double walled vent pipe form the plumbing section at the hardware store. It is required now in new construction homes because it insulates well. After building it. I will coat the intake with heat resistant bar-b-q paint and then coat with whatever color paint I want for a nice finish.
