Subject: Got my Trans-Go Shift Kit Today!
IP: Logged

Message:
I am going to install this in the next week or so and I would like some input from folks who already have it in thier trucks. I have a '97 w/ 5.2 and 44re tranny, but I imagine it will react the same as the 46re.

What setting did you install your Trans-go shift kit, and how do you like it? I am particularly interested in the RACE setting.

I will be installing a full lock-up converter with a stall around 2400 to 2600 in the next 6 months, how will the RACE setting react with a stall in this range? Will it break my neck?

Let me know!
Thanks!

jASON - I do not have experience with trans kits, but it will be on my "to do" list soon.

I'm also trying to get educated with stall speeds.

Kepp us posted after your install.

Thanks

Bill

I purchased it from truckperformance.com . I also bought a set of Powerslot rotors from them and a set of Hawk high performance brake pads from Jegs. The shift kit was around $95.
I put the new rotors and pads on this afternoon. The pads haven't had a chance to seat yet, but they are definately a TREMENDOUS improvement from the AutoZone lifetime warranty pads. I definately recommend the Hawk pads. Haven't done enough driving yet to see how the Powerslots hold up after staying hot for a while, but from what I have heard, they will be fine.

Shift rpm is adjustable after install, all you have to do is pull the pan and turn a allen screw, follow thier setup and it will shift at 5000rpm.The normal setup will not chirp 2nd with good tires, but why would you want wasted power and a 40mph fishtail. The mush will be gone and 1-2 is a big inprovement crisp and fast.A mod V8 will pick up about 2/10ths in the 1/4.Don't forget to stop by a dodge dealer and get some anti-foam.

Thanks for the info Aaro.

Well I watched the video and now I am an auto tranny professional. I ran outside and jacked my truck up on all fours. Dropped the trans pan, and pulled the valve body. I quit after that and I will dig back in tomorrow.

I will definately get a grade 8 nut and bolt set to make a tranny drain in the pan. I am going to drill a hole in the pan and weld the nut in, and plug it with the bolt and a rubber washer. draining the pan and dropping the pan at the same time SUCKS!

After watching the video, I have decided that I will just be modifying my tranny to the FIRM setting. To go to the RACE setting, I will have to unbolt my overdrive to install a part and do some work on the rear servo. FIRM should be fine, if not, I will tear her apart again.

FYI this is the first time I have worked on the internals of an auto. Crap, I have never even worked on the outside of an auto. This is going to be fun.

I did a couple of "Home" kits from a Mopar Mag and they worked out great. Now if I could just find out how to do it to the Dak trans.

I built a '68 318 a few years ago with a Crower 252/256 cam and that thing would shift at 60mph with 276 gears. The hp would top out around 53mph. The new (free) 904 tranny I got for it didn't last long because it couldn't grab second gear fast and hard enough and ended up burning the clutches and bands. Young and Stupid.
I ended up dismantling the valve body EVERY weekend for a month to clean the plungers and plates.

The one thing about the Trans-Go shift kits is the fact that you have to unbolt and slide back the rear houseing of the transmission... when i did this it tore the gasket and i have to remove the whole thing to replace it .....

You don't have to take that step if you don,t want to go nuts,I didn't do it and the shift are fast, any faster and I might chirp 1-2 shifts. Also back to low at any speed or "gear command" could cost you a engine if you ever hit the gear shift at 65mph!

Uh-Oh! Dunno what went wrong, but my truck was slipping pretty bad when I got it back together. I did everything, including adjusting the front and rear bands to specs. I called a tranny shop and they towed it to thier shop. I went by there this afternoon and they had it out of the truck. DARK BROWN FLUID!!!! They haven't gone into it yet, but I assume I have a burnt clutch. They are going to rebuild it for me and do it right.

MAN am I disgusted at myself. Oh well. ANyways, I will let you know how it does when I get it back.

OK! got my truck back today!!!!! My truck shifts great! It was definately a good idea to put in the shift kit, but it was a bad idea to try and do it myself! It ended up costing me 1716.00 for the tranny to be repaired on top of the $95.00 for the shift kit and 30 or so dollars for fluid and filter.

If you have any doubts as to whether or not you can install it, have it done by a shop instead. It will save you the heartache I had!

They couldn't tell me what I did wrong. They tore into the valve body and everything looked right, but they suggested that the valve body may have warped causing channel bleed. They put a new valve body in as well as replace my clutches, torque converter and all of my seals. Seems to be working fine. I am taking it back up there today to get them to turn my line pressure up a little. They left the line pressure turned down to the stock position. It still shifts better, but not quite as hard as I wanted.

jASON,
I am so sorry to here that. I have experience doing that, done about six already...years ago, and I know it can be difficult. I had to read the book over and over and over, WHILE I had the thing apart. When I did the 727 for my Comanche's 318, I did the WHOLE thing, cleaned every nut, bolt and clutch, drum, band. When it went together I had spare parts, so I had to do it over again, but I had time.
Hope you have better luck next time.

BMac

Thanks BMac. Got the line pressure turned up yesterday to 3.5 turns from flush, and my truck shift great now. I get a 2nd gear chirp on 275/60/16's and 3.55's. Shift characteristics have changed for the highway as well. Seems to come out of lock-up quicker.

2000DAK , If you have the 4.7's auto trans you may be out of luck as far as a shift kit goes. That trans has two 2nd gears!?!? ,but a good performance trans shop can do mods but you have to trust the person doing the work and you won't know how they did for 10-30,000 miles, shift bind will act like a good shift but your trans won't last long.
