Message: I got a holley street avenger for my camaro and i was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem.
Everything runs fine. Lots of power. The only thing is at idle it jumps up and down by 300rpm and then stops and idles fine then it does it again. I dont think its a vacume leak because when you pump the brakes the engine is not effected only slightly and throttle responce is quick.
I leveled out the float using the peep windows on the side and they are right on. The only thing i didnt do is touch the two idle screws on the side of the metering block. Could this cause the problem. Also when you start to let out the clutch it bogs and will stall if you dont give it a lot of gas then it runs fine. It only happens under 1500 rpm.
Once it gets going it hauls ass. 0-60 4.6 seconds out of a 358 chev engine in a 86 camaro.
Its a good thing I own a dakota because i need it to get parts for this peice of **** chevy. Maybe i will put some weird displacement dodge in it.

Message: Mar,
Try to set the idle circuit with a vacuum gauge. Turn each screw in until the engine starts to die and then back it out again about 1/2 turn. Once you've done this, hook up a vacuum gauge to the engine (manifold vacuum port) and adjust the screws (evenly) to get the highest vacuum reading and then turn them back in about a 1/4 turn.
Did this plenty of times on my old Holley 3310 and Edelbrock 750's. (Switched to the Projection System from Holley and never looked back.) ;)

Message: HOlleys are great carbs very tuneable,yu gota do the basics first,is this a new carb? or a used one every time I`ve slapped on a used one I always get a bad idle the air bleed holes get blocked and dont meter vacum at idle well,if its new turn in your idle screws and back out 2 turns then adjust with a vacum guage like bernd said trying to get your highest vacum signal at idle,Most probs with holleys are a incorrect float level set your floats so the gas is just under the sight plug even this may be too high. to check turn the engine off and while its sitting look down the carb bore and see if gas is dribbling out the primary shooters,if it is turn the float down a little more, also is this a vacum secondary or mech secondaries adjust the scondary throttle plate so its just slightly open and do the above adjustments for the primary idle, then ther are lots of tweaks to dial in this carb Mar

Message: Thanks guys. I think i got it pretty dialed it. It runs good now. My biggest problems was when i relesed the clutch it would bog really fast. Even when the fan kicked in the engine boged. It didnt do this with the doublepumber 800cfm.
So what i did was turned the two idle screws all the way in. then about 1 and a half turns out on each side. I started it and kept turning them by half turns until I got the highest RPM. I got in the car and drove it around the block. It felt a lot stronger and is perfect. I dont have a vacume gauge so i will buy one and do it again properly. But at least i now know that it is an adujstment problem and not a carb or vacume leak problem.
Thanks for all your help...

Message: checking it with a vac. gauge is a good idea.
but i'd be almost willing to bet you might have something going on w/ the vac. advance on the distributor too. usually idle quality probs are always related to timing. in my experience anyways.
you can actually cover them up by tweeking the idle mix screws instead of checking the advance/retard.
also, are you sure youre running the right rpms for your cam?( at idle)
im no expert, but i have had all these things plague me.
its worth a check anyways...
