Message: "Pinging" is pre-ignition knock and is generally caused by using low octane fuel or selecting the wrong transmission gear under load. I have a 3.9L V-6 (2000) and it suffers from chronic pinging and a very poor idle. The dealer has been unable to resolve this issue. There is at least one other vehicle in my area with the same malady.
I'd love to hear from someone with the same symptoms that has a sucessful outcome.
