Subject: headers are cursed IP: Logged
Message: umm, ok. I've put on jba headers for my 4.7 2001 dodge dakota. Damn thing has been leaking ever since at the driver's side collector. (I know, I finally found a big exhaust stain there) I can never get a full seal there. I think the flange i warped. I've tightened it againa and again. I've had 2 shops work on it. Same story. I don't wanna take it out and return it to jba, because of all the work i put into it. To take it off and put a new one in will make me lose my sanity, but i'll guess i'll do it if there's nothing else to be done. Anything I can do. Maybe I can put a gasket in there? What size and type if so. I was thinking about having it welded shut, but i don't think they can do that. Please help. I'm pulling my hairs here.

Message: Take it to a shop and have them extend the y-pipe. This is what I had to do so the headers would line up with y-pipe. Should be less than $50...

Message: i have an 01 quad 5.9. edlebrock headers. i had a similar problem. constant leak at the collectors. i eliminated my y pipe and rerouted, partly because i had to, because of the pre-cats. i also went with a ford steel lined gasket between the header and the cats (only because the ford happened to fit just right) no problems since.

Message: fot80, I have experienced the same problem. The JBA collector, and I think everyone elses, uses a different sealing angle than the OE manifold. That is why JBA says to use a layer of high temp, O2 sensor safe silicone on the collector before installing the Y pipe to the header. If you will lower your Y pipe, clean the sealing surface, put on the silicone, install and tighten, wait a few hours, overnight preferably, you should solve your problem. Good luck. The JBA Y pipe I used for my application fit perfectly and solved the problem, but they do not make a Y for every application because of the pre-cats on most newer trucks. Good luck.

Message: fot80, do you have any problems with the headers leaking at the engine or just the flange? Did you use anything other than the gasket that came with it, some kind of sealent? Hot RT, does the high temp RTV work as a sealant on the flange or is there something else that works better?
Thanks

Message: I have had the same problem but can not hear it until I am driving. And I only hear it when I press the gas down with the radio off of course. At first I thought that it might be pinging because I installed new plugs Autolite 3923's at the same time that I installed the headers JBA's, but I checked the plugs and they looked fine so I don't know why it is still leaking. I used the silcone several times when trying to get rid of that annoying noise but still no good. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side so I mainly work on that side but it still won't go away. Please help!!! I'm going insane!!!

Message: horbedarn, it's only coming from the flange. pretty damn sure of that. Well, richard, me and you seem to be stuck in the same boat. Bolt-on installation my ass. I hate jba headers.

Message: well, i called jba and they said i probably need to swap them, now i know i probably should do this , but i REALLY do not want to spend all that work taking it off, putting on the stock manifolds, and then installing the new set. I hate jba. Anything that I could do besides this? Help! Oh yeah, i was thinking about getting autolites 3923 or 5224. What should the gap setting be?

Message: gap the plugs at factory specs unless you run nos or a sc. I was wondering what the torque on the flange bolts is suppose to be. I think that I read somewhere in the manual that it was only 19 ft/lbs. This seems very low for exhaust bolts. I don't know maybe I am wrong. anybody know or did they just tighten the s#*t out of them.

Message: Richard, I tightened those as hard as i could, put atv sealant before i tightened em. The sound will start to go away as it carbons up and surface rusts as has happned with mine right now just like mar said. Noise is finally starting to die out. I REALLY TIGHTENED THOSE THINGS UP. I don't know if u want to do what i did, but i thought i was about to break those bolts, but it seems to have worked. Oh, btw, thanks for the help guys.

Message: fot80 did you have to buy new bolts because when I first put my headers on I bent those bolts all to pieces when I tightened them up. I went to the local auto store and bought some grade 8 bolts and they have not twisted or anything yet. I will try tightening them up again and see if they go away. I was wondering what the model number on the side of yours says because my has 1939 on it for my 1998 dakota which is supposed to be the one that fits according to the JBA web site, but mine has a egr valve connections on the passenger side that I currently have blocked off and is not leaking but I was wondering if your said the same.

Message: I work for a competitor company Hedman Hedders
and since I helped design the hedders and am also in charge of warranty of all product sold at Hedman! The problem we see quit offen is the material the Hedders are manufactured of. IE JBA offers stainless, which should be a longer lasting and better product! Main problem is the material the cylinder heads are produced out of.
Most cases cast Iron early and almost all Late models aluminum. Here is what we found stainless while being in most casses superior the expansion rate verses Mild Steel in this design (short bolt-in design) is very critical so much so that bolts, headers and cylinder is all different. What we found with steel the rate is less therefore there is less maintainance. The other area you may look at is the exhaust system supended properly so that if you disconnected the y-pipe assyembly dose it stay in place and is not preloading the headers to support the exhaust system? The hedders are not designed to support the exhaust system and will have adverse affect on hedder life and maintance. Feel free to contact me at jimw@hedman.com if you need any further help!
