Subject: 180 vs. 160 IP: Logged
Message: I have a 160 thermastat now in my truck. Nobody says anything about the 160, is it good or bad? I am very curious. Most of the dakotas I read about have 180's, but they dont say why they used them and not the 160. What can any of you tell me about either of them?
Thanks for all of your input.

Message: I got the 160 too. No probs yet. Did notice a slight performance increase (this may have been psychological) after changing form the stock unit.
My truck runs like a champ.

Message: Put a 160 in a 98 w/ a Kenne Bell supercharger. KB recommended this as part of their "Big Gulp" option.
Engine definately ran cooler and did seem to help w/ performance. However, after a month or so I begin to get code of engine running too cool.
Put 180 back in and cleared up problem. I could have probably stayed w/ 160 but I didn't like the check engine light on all the time.

Message: A '99 will run fine with a 160 and set no codes. Older computers would set a code and run very rich. I don't know what year it changed but the newer ones just compensate for the lower temp. I ran a 160 for several months in my '99 5.2. Couldn't tell a performance difference. I went back to the 180 because it took too long to warm the cab up on a winter day.
