Hey everybody,

I just wanted to say thanks to those who responded the last time I posted my question about exhaust systems. I have to say I was pretty frustrated trying to guess what certain systems would end up sounding like on my truck.

Eventually, I started calling around muffler shops until I found a guy who actually new something about mufflers. I told him my situation and that I wanted something that sounded deeper and louder, but not obnoxious. I wanted a Flowmaster. He recommended Dynomax. The guy said that he would help me choose. In fact, he was willing to try a few different mufflers on my truck until I found one that sounded great to me. (Maybe surfing the net is not the best way to choose products after all.)

He first put on a Dynomax race magnum. It was deep, but a little muttled, I thought. We tried out a couple others, and I ended up liking the Flowmaster after all. I got the 50 series delta flow, and I have to tell you that my Dakota finally sounds the way a 5.9L V8 should sound - beefy.

The mechanic welded up the muffler and connected a 3" mandrel-bent pipe and welded that too. Even with my indecisiveness, it only took about an hour from start to finish.

The system, installed, cost about $300

Driving home in my "new" truck, I was on cloud nine, but a little worried that my fiance might not like the sound. I drove it nice and mellow into her complex that night. That was Wednesday. Well, she rode in the truck for the first time when we went out this past Saturday night, and as I pulled away from the house, I didn't want to ask her if she liked the new sound for fear that she might hate it. After about 15 minutes, she voiced her opinion: "You know, it's not that much louder than it was before." All I could think was, "Yes! There is a God." That just made everything perfect, especially since she bought my system for my birthday.

Since the sound people like on their cars varies so greatly, I am now of the firm opinion that anyone considering an exhaust upgrade should find a shop where the mechanic is willing to let him hear a few different mufflers on his particular vehicle. That way, everyone will go away happy. I know that I will refer people to the shop I went to. The work was done while I waited, and it sounds great.

Does anyone want to comment on this?

John

Thanks Art,

I had actually checked out that website. Since this is the first time I have owned a truck worth modifying, I didn't really want to have too many mufflers to choose from. I have heard of most of the popular names out there, and Flowmaster came up a lot. I was toying with Gibson, but was pretty sure I'd want to go a little louder.

I just feel lucky that, out of two mufflers, I liked both, and I love the sound of the Flowmaster that's on there now.

Incidentally, what do you run on your truck?

John

Hey Art,

I was curious why you didn't like the Borla? I was thinking of getting one on my 4.7L QC. Any help would be great.

Another thing to anyone who may have some info...I've been hearing of many people running different exhaust systems out there and finding out they didn't get much gain or lost hp. Some G-tech, some not. This was for the 4.7L. Anyone 'actually' get some proof of a gain in hp?

Thanks guys.
