Message: What specifically (besides advanced timing) does this do for/to the engine? I don't race it but want to have the go power when pressing the go pedal.
I got my Mopar PCM installed yesterday. No problems so far, drives great though the power gain is most notable above 2000 rpm. Did not have any pinging (running 93 octane, 3923s and 180 deg thermostat). I know I still have a bottle neck at the stock TB but I'm working on it.

Changes the fuel tables in the PCM for better performance and changes the automatic shift points (not in your specific case though).
There is a little bit more than that, but timing, fuel, and shift points are the basics that are altered. You'd be surprised what a properly tuned timing curve can do for HP and TQ though...Mopar got it right on their PCM's.

Requirements: 92 octane fuel required (180 T'Stat recommended). On the "Plug and Play" part, on the newer Gen-III Dakota's, you'll have to have the dealer flash in your VIN and Odometer readings.
You're not really supposed to tow with the Mopar PCM, but i've talked to several who do it anyway. (They run a 180 T'Stat and 92/93 Octane fuel.) It also depends on what you're towing as well. (Small items such as light loads or a Jet Ski/Wave Runner aren't a big concern. Big boats and cars would be.)

Message: Bernd, thanks for the info. I had prepared for the PCM with the 180 deg thermostat, 3923s and 93 octane (we get 93 in NC)and synthetic oil. No problems or pinging today either.
I had a 92 Bronco and put a Hypertech on that, had major problems so I was leary about this but so far, I am mucho impressed.
Joel, it took 5 minutes to change. Disconnect the battery, turn key on for 15 seconds, snap off the plastic cover on the plug, unbolt the plug, unscrew the three mounting screws, put the new one in, bolt in the plug, snap on cover, reattach battery and let idle for 20 minutes before driving, drive gentle to let it learn for about 20 miles than have fun. (the idle part and driving came from the previous owner of the PCM, which I scored for 1/3 the original price, got a 94-95 Federal, Manual trans 4x2/4x4 PCM part number P5249542)

Message: I believe if you were to tow something over 2000 pounds, you would have problems unless you have a timing retard control.
I finally got some detonation yesterday at the DML meet, the PCM had a chance to learn and around 3500-4000 rpm, some sporadic pinging.

Message: 95V8, you mentioned something that tickled my fancy. As the previous owner of a 99 R/T, do you or anyone else know why they de-rated the towing capacity to 2000#? I have heard rumors from just about every dealer I know about burning valves, overheating (my problem), lowered suspension, weak driveshaft, soft springs and wrong tires. Well, everything as far as driveline was much beefier than my 94 CC 5.2 and the weight rating of tires and springs were higher too. If someone would have given me a strait answer so I could fix it, then I would probably still own it today!! I actually wish I had kept it but I did enjoy what I replaced it with. Sadly, it is gone too. I really need to stop buying cars!!

Message: Yes, to the A&M grad, class of 97'. I really am interested in trying to get some more power out of the Dak as I am looking to go to 35'' tires when I lift it and I am thinking there are a few ways of doing this without breaking the bank. I am really trying not to make any wrong decisions like I did when I was modifying my Cobra as I ended up with a garage and attic full of parts that I ended up not liking.
