Subject: K&N (57-1509) V6 install problems IP: Logged
Message: Howdy folks,
Last night I attempted to install my K&N FIPK gen-II(57-1509) onto my 2000 club cab V6 with cruise and A/C. The dayum thing don't fit. It is the V8 kit though, so- it shouldn't....but Bernd done made his fit. Anybody else able to squeeze this thing on their V6 dak with cruise. The air conditioning lines are in the way, but I think I can push them down a bit. It's the cruise control that is occupying my cone filters space. I didn't even try to put the heat shield, I'm waiting for access to metal cutting tools for that one. So, any pointers. I guess the solution would be to move the cruise control ....err somewhere.
Woa is me. I bought the K&N because I couldn't wait any longer for QuickD to deliver his intake, which was paid for...two months now.
Anyway...can my dak have an intake...please?
Thank you sooooo much for any assistance fellas,
-Greg

I had to re-fabricate the heat shield slightly to fit and yes, I bent my A/C lines a little bit as well. (Be careful not to put sharp bends in them though.)
As for the cruise control...sorry, not an option on my 5-Speed.

I doubt QuickDs would fit either. I have no intake options. I am sad.
Shoulda had a V8.

I believe Tony's does fit.
Do you have (or can you take) a picture of what you're having the problem with? If you can, send it to me privately: bernd@texas.net.
I'll take a peek to see what might be a solution.

Message: Bernd,
Thanks so much for offering to help.
I don't have a digi-camera/scanner so I cannot provide pictures. However, the problem is the cruise control. The mechanism is placed right in front, even touching, the factory air box. So the K&N intake tube(w/o filter) ends right at the cruise control. A buddy at work took a look at it and suggested hacking a length of the tube off. DING DING DING I thought. I also remember Tony telling me during a phone conversation that he had to cut his tube to fit the cruise control daks. So it is all coming back to my foggy head.
I'm going to go down during lunch break and try to fit this thing on. The tube is cut, just need to throw it on now and see if things line up right.
I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
-Greg

Greg,
I just found this site:
http://www3.edgenet.net/wildnites/Mods.htm
This site mentions and has pics of a K&N Gen2 with the cruise control relocated. This is on a 2000 R/T, but his email addy is listed on the home page and he might be able to help.

Message: What a bummer! I have a 2001 V6 3.9L, Quad cab, 5 speed with cruise. I was hoping to install a Gen II after hearing Bernd say the Gen II would fit. I remember he wasn't sure about cruise control. I wrote to K&N filters and after a long while they wrote back informing me that they are developing a Gen II for 2000-2001 daks. They said this would be available soon and to check back every few weeks. They weren't sure what engines it would fit until closer to its release. Huh???? Oh well. Greg, keep us up to date. Thanks.
Hey Bernd, Bending AC lines sounds scarey. Can you just mod the heat shield? Thanks for all the info.

Bending the AC lines isn't all that hard. As long as you don't use brute forse and the bends are smooth, no problems. Without seeing where the cruise control resides, I couldn't say. (Guess it's time to take a trip to my local dealer and pop some hoods again. ;)

Message: Howdy,
I have the FIPK installed now w/o heat shield. The solution involved a hack saw and the removal of about four inches from the length of the intake tube. I left the cruise control the way it is. Tony (QuickD) said it is possible to push the cruise control down(?) and 'intense' has a link up there for relocating the cruise. But I'm content with the way it's setup on mine. Heat shield? nah...not gonna bother. QuickD customers are running virtually the same setup as I have (no heat shield).
Hope that helps. I'm sure there is a cruise control re-location option that is better. But I don't know it.
Oh yeah, the intake is great! Sounds great at WOT. I want me a throttle body now.
Cheers!

Message: I just came from a local performance truck shop after attempting to price/order a K&N. They said that they were not available for the V6... I looked it up on the K&N website & the chart didn't include my truck, which is a 97 3.9 V6. What gives? Are all you V6 owners out there having to modify? The K&N site lets you punch in your trucks specs & it will spit out a yes/no part number... which it did let me do minus the year.

Message: You could probably order just the cruise-control relocation kit from John at Intense Performance... I have it installed on mine (4.7L) and it makes quite a bit more room for the big cone filter. It's not hard to install either.

Message: I don't have cruise control... I wouldn't be installing it myself (mechanically challenged) - is it a big deal to get it done if modifications are necessary? Why would they make it for a whole range of models but leave one out? I've been told that no way do they make one for my truck, but that they did make one for the 3.9 V6 Gen II. Why? Did it have to do with the older ones having carburetors? I was very intrigued by Bakerman's recent posting of his custom mod - I wish I had that kind of genius (I bet my truck does too). Thanks for all the advice & food for thought guys.

Message: There is no kit needed to move the cruise on the V6. Just remove the two bolts on the top bracket and the one on the bottom. Then move it forward so the rear hole is on the front bolt. Then the bottom bracket will line up with another un used hole in the truck. Use a self tapping screw that is a tad bigger than the hole. These are the directions that came with the Airaid I have. It moved the cruise up about 2 inches. The directions said it was for the 5.9 only but I had to do it on my V6. Hope this helps.

It comes with a cruise relocation mounting kit. I'll bet they have it for the 3.9 as well. Got my edelbrock headers the same way. Always call the manufacurer, as thier websites are not always up to date.

Message: Thanks LIBlackdak. Those diamond clears are a reasonably inexpensive and simple way to customize the front end.
K&N is considered to be the best. When you think about the objective being to get the most uninterupted flow of air into the engine, it makes sense. The air raid hooks up to the stock accordian tube, which makes use of the stock air hat. Both of which purportedly slow down the air somewhat. It's all about how much those little increments mean to you. The K&N is one smooth streamlined piece, so air flow is maximized. Whether it is worth the extra $$$ is up to you.

Message: I have to agree. I don't think it looks as nice as other intake kits. I'd like to get a K&N FIPK, but there are a couple of things detering me from doing do. The cost and the fact that it's black plastic. I'd like to spend less, get about the same performance and dress up the engine compartment a bit more. I think the chrome tubing would look pretty good in there. That's why I'm thinking about going with the 360 air intake or the Intense Performance intake.

Message: yeah but the plastic keeps the air colder i think and it claims to deliver more hp then the other kits. it looks a lot better then airaid.
The FIPK added 26 hp to a jeep grand cherokee, all those other intakes don't come close to that. it adds more then double the torque of airaid
