Message: Hey fellow dakota drivers,
Would someone be able to tell me when the best time to change the fuel injectors and fuel filter on my '97 5.2L. I'm approaching 200,000km. or 124,000mi. Also, would I lose hp by putting a 3" pipe from the y back(includes a new cat).
3rdly, I'm thinking of adding nitros, and I'd like to go with a min. 150hp shot, is there some min. work that I should get done to the engine to strengthen it or will the 5.2L be able to handle the extra power in it's stock form.
Thanks

Message: Oliver:I think I can help you on all accounts, first,my sources say you should change out the injectors every 50,000 miles,so your over due for sure, second,a 3" pipe from the cat back is a good thing, but I would also recommend a 3" inlet outlet 40 series 2 chamber flowmaster, sounds great on my R/T,and third,in my opinion if you put that much nitrous on that motor with that mileage,it wont last 2 bottles, nitrous companies like nitrous express sell kits for your truck that are adjustable from 50 to 150 shot,150 is max,and I have heard of people blowing up there motors on the 150 shot, nitrous is very cool but very dangerous, with that many miles on your truck I would definetly not recommend nitrous, but if you did, limit it to a 50 or 75 shot. And to do it right you need a adjustble timing control box & a purge line, you also need to get new spark plugs 1 step cooler and lower the gap.I would buy the Mopar 5.9 R/T short block and get your stock heads ported, then put on headers, cat back exhaust, intake and throttle body, then the nitrous, and for safety reasons limit your nitrous shot to 100,thats what I would do,but dont put nitrous on your 5.2 as is,unless you want to replace it REALLY soon, good luck.

Message: BH. thanks for the nitros tips. what throttle body would you recommend for the 5.2. My exhaust is a 3" from the y, thru the cat to the muffler and then splits to dual 2.5" pipes. I do want to put on headers and have heard that hookers or jbl would be a good bet. Could you recommend a good manifold to install as well. I know my mileage is high, I've keep my truck imaculatly maintained, but I had expected that I need to do some strengthening work to the engine. Thanks for your input.

Message: Oliver:Here is what you need to get,a 50mm F&B throttle body,a Hughes Stage 1 manifold, and Mopar headers,I have seen the JBA headers and they are worthless,1 1/2" primary tubes, you should have 1 5/8" primary tubes like the Mopar headers.they cost about $500.00 with a new bigger Y-Pipe,the F&B is about $400.00,and the Manifold is about $450.00.The Hughes manifold is a stock beer barrel manifold but they cut back the runners and opened them up a little, good bolt on with the F&B,worth 2 to 3 tenths in the quarter mile.A mopar pcm and 180 thermostat would do wonders also.PCM is about $300.00,that all should get you started and you should be able to install all of this at home, except for the welding. If you want to save money, you could take your stock throttle body and manifold to a machine shop, and get the to cut back your runners on the manifold and open up the top of your throttle body,or you could do it with a dremel tool and a small grinder,if you want I can send you some jpeg's to see what I mean. But all of these mods, and a Gen II K&N intake will give you a good kick in the pants!

Message: One more thing, there is no fuel filter per se,there is a screen on the fuel pump/regular that is in the tank.Unless you have a habit of buying cheap "no name" gas, then maintance is not required to the screen. Also, skip the 50mm TB go with a 52 or 53mm. I have a 97 with the 5.2 and I just put a Holley 53mm on mine and it runs sweet.A lot of people would say that 53mm is the absoulute max,but if do all the other stuff, you'll need all 53mm.(50mm is stock size)
The holley TB is available at truckperformance.com
Good Luck!

Message: FYI,the stock tb is 50mm at the blades, but above the blades it is much smaller and doesnt flow well at all,go to F&B's web sight,Bruce has flow charts for the stock tb and the 50mm F&B,there is no need for a big tb like 52mm or 53mm unless you have a cam, heads, blower and more. The big tb kill port velocity which is needed badly.Plus the holes in the manifold are only 50mm,so if you did not open up the manifold, you are really wasting your time.Go to the F&B website and learn: www.flometrics.com/TBhomepage.html
And FYI it is rumored that Kenne Bell will be buying F&B tb's to sell as a package deal with his blowers and headers, not Holley tb's!And I opened up the top of my stock tb and the F&B 50mm still did way better with the performance,I also gained 3 MPG after install!

Message: No reason you can't run nitrous on a 5.2. They're easily as stout as the 5.9.
