Message: Anyone out there that has tried to put a big block in a 87 - 95 Dakota. I have a 91 that I have a 67 newport rear end shortend 3.5" on both sides and a hopped up A-500 trans. I can get a kit to mate the big block to the trans. Need info on the k member mods and headers. Working on a 496 c.i. 400 big block for this truck if I can get the big block to fit.

Message: I've heard stories about 440s in daks. If you want a serious drag racer though I've heard you'll have to stiffen up the frame. I also watch on TV once as the head of Mopar Performance was asked what was the best thing to put the 528 in and he said a late model GenII dak. Said the frame was already in pretty good shape and they even had a frame there with the motor and tranny in it.
Like I said earlier and I would like someone to disagree with me if you think so.
You can do ANYTHING you want to if you have the $$$. You can fit a pratt&whitney in there if you want to.

Message: According to a friend I race with it was no big deal to put a bored and stroked 400 big block in his '89 Dak. He uses a 727 torqueflite and an 8 3/4 rear from a B-body car. Stock rear springs w/clamps, 10.5" slicks, small fuel cell and 2 batteries in bed, no frame re-inforcements, shorty block-hugger type headers. He's been racing it for about 3 years.
I've raced against him so I have a time slip for one of his runs.....1.506 60', 11.227 @ 116.19 mph.

it fit perfect the drivers side motor mount was in the right place but i had to move the pass side one the be even with the drivers i had to put a rear sump oil pan on it and i had to make a new bracket for the tranny to mount up right i had a drive shaft made. the end result is awsome i have not raced anyone with it yet ineed new tires i am running the stock 275 65 16s on it and from dead stop it will just spin forever and ever and ever

Message: Anyone who has owned old mopars (such as myself) will tell you.....power is nothing without traction.
If I remember correctly a 69 RoadRunner with a 440 6 pack was faster than a 70 Cuda Hemi. You flamers are more than welcome to check my memory but being the owner of a few big block Cudas and a big block B body or 2 I will be the first to tell you that a Cuda hasnt half the traction on a B body and a pickup is even worse!!
The big block gen 2 Dak project you might be remembering is one Daryl Alderman started and never finished, but that thing was fully tubbed out.
A big block in a stock rear Dak.......in my opinion (from owning a few big blocks) is a waste of an engine.
If you cant get traction in a Dak with a 408, how in the world do you think another 100+ lbs of tq will help that situation any? And as a few have pointed out.....you now have 80% of all your weight over the front wheels!! Anybody who has any chassis setup time drag racing will tell you that is a no traction setup.
Just my .02, flame away if you must. But dont if youve never owned and driven anything BB Mopars, please.

Message: I have owned plenty of big block mopars, I have even installed a 400 BB in a '75 D100 that had no power steering. And yes that was a horrible thing to drive everyday, but just becouse it was a BB everybody liked. I know that the extra power and torque is just gonna go up in smoke in a pick-up that has the aerodynamics of a brick and I think most of these guys know that too. If they don't, let them find out for themselves, I'm not gonna call them "flamers". I actually think the BB Dakota is a good idea even if it is just for shock value.

Message: i agree with you guys... motor first, traction later.
Right now i have a pretty stout rearend setup that gets the power to the ground. Currently, i am working on putting a 400 big block under the hood of my genIII dakota. Should be a nice long project but i am not gonna try to make it as power full as i can... dont want to be buying new axles and crap all the time.
