Subject: Glass packs any good? IP: Logged
Message: I want to get a better sound out of my 93 Dakota with the 5.2 but dont want to spend over $50.00 since I am not sure how long I will have the truck and funds are tight right now. I saw some Cherry Bomb glass packs at Kragen for under $20.00 and can get a muffler shop to weld them up for another $20.00 or $30.00. My co-worker has them on his 70' Nova and they sound great with the headers and he only has a little 307 in that thing. I dont have or want headers now but was wondering if the glass packs are any good?

Message: Everyone on this site is all about getting a whole Flowmaster kit and an MBRP dual set-up and a Gibson stainless blahblahblah. Everyone seems to have forgotten that a $17.00 Thrush Glass-Pak from Pep Boys will give you almost the same exact noise and is a straight-thru muffler. You just need to weld it in line with the stock exhaust and you've saved yourself up to mega-$$$ in expense. Is anyone going to SEE your stainless blahblahblah kit after it's under your truck? Nope. Just hear it. So I think glass-paks are a viable option.
Go to www.fast4x4.net and watch some of Jon Smith's videos. Those videos were shot while he was running glass-paks and duals out the rear. Sounds nice.

Message: Yes if you live were it doesn't swon go ahead and buy the $18 glass pack but if you live where the snow and salt will eat your truck you would be a dumb azz not to put stainless under it unless you don't plan on keeping it more than 2-3 years other wise go with gibson it sounds good easy to install and it wont break the bank like mbrp.

Message: The exhaust from flowmaster and gibson are tuned to get great sound and max hp. A cherry bomb will just get you sound but you risk LOSING HP. Or you might just stay the same...

Message: GOOD POINT ABOUT THE SNOW & SALT. iT DOESN'T MUCH MATTER HERE IN ATLANTA. AS FOR LOSING HP, i LOST HP AND TQ BY WELDING A FLOWMASTER INTO MY STOCK EXHAUST ON MY 1992 V6. I GOT THE HP AND TQ BACK (PLUS SOME) BY REPLACING EVERYTHING FROM THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS BACK WITH DYNOMAX SUPER-TURBO AND A HI-FLOW CAT. I HAVE YET TO BUY THE DYNOMAX FOR MY 2000 4.7 BECAUSE THEY WANT TWICE THE MONEY FOR THEIR NEW SUPER TURBO KIT.

Message: Thats my point you have to get the WHOLE exhaust system. Just putting a muffler in place might lose you hp.

Message: I had glass packs on my old Bronco. I'm in Colorado where it does snow once in a while. I eventually had a problem with an exhaust leak, but I don't know how long it took to develop, as the exhaust was done by a previous owner. I put new glass packs on and didn't have a problem again. I didn't drive it very much though. Now I have a flowmaster on the dak. I'm no expert, but I do have an observation. A glass pack is designed to wear out. The flowmaster looks like it uses chambers and little walls inside to be effective. I would think the flowmaster design would last longer. Again, this is an observation and not an expert opinion. I couldn't tell you about what it would do to the power of the vehicle though. I know the setup I have increase performance.

Message: If your worried about a glass pack wearing out think about two things. You could replace them once a year for 4 years and still save money. My other thought is, how long do you actually expect to keep you truck.
If it is over ten years get a stainless exhaust system. If not, save yourself a couple of hundred $$$$$.

Message: First off, I live in Sacramento, Ca and we get no snow here at all. Second, I am mainly looking for the sound factor since my stock muffler is shot. I also dont want to lose any HP ot torque I already have with my 5.2 but wouldnt be heartbroken if I dont gain any either. What size pipe should I have coming off my cherry bomb? My co-worker says he has to replace his every 2-4 years but at under $20.00 each, I wont lose any sleep.

Message: I've actually heard from a good friend that just sold his '96 Dak with a 5.2, that running no muffler at all (just a straight pipe) doesn't sound excessively loud and actually sounds nice because the cat provides just enough muffling to not be obtrusive. He never had a problem with anyone complaining. (this is just up in Placerville so Sac shouldn't be a problem)

Message: What are the down sides of straight pipes as far as the motor goes? I know when I had trouble with my manifolds, I was told if I drove the truck without them, I may burn up a valve due to no back pressure. What will straight pipes do for me as far as performance?

If you can make it to my town I'll give you my glasspack with dual pipes, already made. It's sitting in my backyard and needs a new yard to call home!

Message: I always recommend against glasspacks. Yes, you can see through them. BUT, the indented pipe going through it causes a great deal of turbulence, and hence backpressure. That is why the new ones like the Dynomax Ultra-Flow and the Magnaflow have a straight through pipe that is perforated, not indented like a glasspack. You may gain a little with a glasspack, but would be better off with something else.

GEE kevin do you think anyone makes duals for a 85 blazer??? hmmmmm lets see i think so, why dont you go find them and not put totally off topic crap on a dodge dakota website!!!! you must be a jacka$$ to cause if your spending your time brain power trying to make your 85 blazer sound like a v-8 then you have no life, you dickhead, same to you joe.
sorry i had to vent. its just that i've been using this site for help for a long time now and it seems that it has gone to $hit. people come on here and once they see a topic they just butt in and type crap that has nothing to do with the topic!

Message: i had dual glasspacks and headers on my GRAND PRIX (in your FACE, flamered01!!) just kidding, man.
anyway, i had glasspacks and i live in chicago, snow is a concern obviously..i had no tailpipes, just turndowns, and for the rear of thrash testing that car recieved i would definitely recommend glasspacks as long as youre not attempting to tune that thing to run 12's
you wont ruin your motor, but you wont drop your e.t.'s either.
just my 2 cents

Message: I think Glass Packs sound good on Chevys and Fords and a few others because they have a more high pitch sound and they will crackle and pop but Dodge has a real deep tone.
Ya its more money but if you can afford it I would go for flowmasters. If you want to go to exhaustsoundclips.com and they have recordings.

Message: the cheapest way to go is straight pipes. They still sound good, and with the cat aren't to loud. The only thing i can see that they do to my truck is make the motor drink a little more gas. This is where the glasspack comes in handy. Glasspacks sound good and they are a little better on gas milage. Personally I like the staights though.
