Message: Anyone tried the Flowmaster American Thunder package on thier 5.2L? It looks to be a single out system. I used to have a full size GMC Jimmy with dual exhaust and you could really hear me coming. I miss that sound and would like to have it again. I hear the single out systems are the best way to go on the Dakotas to not lose any torque. Is this right?

Message: This is kinda funny since I just ran into a similar problem this afternoon. I currently have the American Thunder System on my 99 R/T and I was wanting to swap out the 50 Series Flowmaster with a louder 40 Series Flowmaster. I called the local Midas guys and asked if I brought the muffler in could they make it into a nice Dual System (with 2 Exhaust Outlets not a true Dual System).
After getting the truck up on the rack I was told that there isn't any room for the pipe going out of the drivers side. I pretty much called Bull$hit since there are plenty of Dakota's running around with duals, and Gibson even offers a Dual out rear system. But it was no dice so now I'm gonna look around for someplace that can give me what I want.
As for your original question I don't think split pipes would lose any torque. I believe, and I could be wrong here, that the back pressure is built up at the Y-pipe connecting the manifold to the Cat Converter. I have heard that you can lose torque if you replace that restrictive pipe with something larger. However I am by no means a Car Expert so some of the other more knowledgable members may wanna speak up about it.

Message: ProfessorZoom... don't believe that sh@t...
I JUST had MIDAS install duals out the back of my 99 Sport 4x4 last Wednesday... We decided to go with mandrel pre-bent pipes to ensure consistent diameter throughout the pipes (since I would still have to pay for the labor of them custom bending pipe if I had them to do it), however I will say that the driver side outlet cost a bit more since it was a little longer and had to go around the spare and out the back.
These pipes ran along the frame and they welded a hanger bracket to the frame to hold it all in place. So if that Midas dealer is telling you it can't be done by then, then they are "full of it".
Now, maybe what they are saying is that they couldn't run the driver's side out at the sides... if that was the case, then yes, they might be right on that one. The frame kinda gets in the way if you were trying to go out the side, however going out the back is wide open.

Message: Yeah I know it could be done, but the way I look at it is if they don't want my business that is fine with me I will just go elsewhere.
I've heard of this nice Mopar Performance shop near me so I might go talk to those guys instead.

Message: I know that the Flowmaster Force II is a single 3" catback with a 50 series SUV muffler. My 5.2 responded very nicely to the Force II system. I'm am fairly certain that the American Thunder is a dual outlet system.
