Message: I was thinking about getting a dodge dakota. I like there look and there are real fast with the right options. But to be fast you need a v8 which is hungry for fuel and will really boost my insurance since I am a teenager.
I am thinking of swapping either an inline 4 or v6 for a 3.5 liter v6 from a Chrysler 300m or LHS.
Can I do this?
If so can it be done without major alterations to the truck?
What kind of trim will the truck probably need to be?A slt? A sport?
If anyone has done this or knows about how to go about doing this, please post a response

Message: Ummm where do I start? First, buy a Dodge Dakota RT with the 5.9L V8. Or buy one with a 4.7 or an older one with a 5.2. They all suck plenty of gas. (So does my V6!) The 300M is front wheel drive thus making the swap practically impossible. SLT, Sport, no difference except painted or chrome bumpers and whatnot. Even a 3.9L V6 would be better suited for the Dak than a 3.5 car engine. More torque, etc. If you want power buy a truck with a big motor and beef it up.

Message: Hey cbsdakota! the 3.9 liter v6 in your dakota only has 225 ft. lbs. of torque. the 300m engine has 255 ft. lbs of torque at about the rpm range.
Also wouldn't i have a good chance of swapping the engine as long as i dont use the same tranny.
I mean they use they same engine as the 300m in a awd minivan.
please send response.

Message: Where are you going to get a tranny that bolts up to the engine to make it work with a rear drive truck. And i dont thing the 3.5 would make your truck a sleeper infact it would probably suck. Stick with a truck or rwd setup.

Message: Don't take this as a 'mean-spirited' comment, but how can you use insurance prices on a V8 (as compared to a V6) when you are basically ready to spend **A LOT MORE** on an engine swap from a 300M or LHS?
This is like the other conversation about "I can't afford the extra $600.00 on a V8 option... but I want fork over a few grand to install a blower (supercharger) on my V6 so I can keep up with those V8s".

Message: I was going to first sell the engine i was ripping out and then buy an engine from a rearended 300m or lhs messed up in some other way.
the v8 option for a dakota is also at least $1500.
up from the v6.
in short i would buy a brand new 4 cylinder for $12,000and have a fast fuel economic engine installed and would still beat the price of a new. Dodge v8 of at least $17,000.
beleive me I have been going over this in my head for a while and have been tempted to just go and get a v8 and pay the insurance and gas prices.
so if you don't have any info on how to do the swap don't post a comment.

Message: Hey Rocketman, don't let these guys get you down. I have a '99 Club Cab dakota with a Suzuki 1.3 liter in it. It is turbo and goes real fast. I can pull a wheelie from 75 mph when I punch it. No one else beleives it until I smoke thier asses on the freeway. I can outrun Vipers and vettes on a regular basis. My son has a tricycle with a VW 1.6 liter aircooled motor on it. I had to take it away from him because he was throwing food at the table again. He outruns cops on his way to kindergarten. You outta see him going through the school zones. I make drugs in my shed. My wife has no teeth. And my daughter is also my niece. My wife has a mouth like a Hoover. I share my wife with my best friend, because friends are suppsed to share. I have a rash, but my wife thinks its just plain sexy.

Message: What you're failing to realize is that the LHS, 300M engine is a transversely mounted engine utilizing a transaxle not an inline trans. You would have to pay a mechanical engineer to design a trans adapter, cross member, engine mounts, etc BIG$$$. Then you have to pay a fabricator to make all those new componets, BIG$$$. Then you'll have to get someone to remap all the perameters on your comp. BIG$$$. The overall length of your driveline will change requiring a custom fabricated driveshaft, a relcation of your shifter, a cutom length speedo cable, and possible transmission tunnel and firewall modifications BIG$$$. After all this your new creation may not even pass emissions inspection in your home state (oh yeah, I forgot to mention the custom fabbed exhaust sytem). For what you'd end up paying for all this work you could buy a V-8 Dak and have money left over. Sorry, but these are the realities of the matter and I only scratched the surface of what would be involved in the swap.

Message: Insurance varies from state to state, but going from a v6 to a v8 in New Jersey (1st/2nd highest rates in the country) had no effect for a TRUCK. A truck by the insurance company is classified as a "work" vehicle. Now the difference in a Mustang or Camaro on the other hand is a very different story.
I would suggest talking to an insurance agent first. I am sure it varies based on state, and perhaps your age has something to do with it, but at one point I had 43 insurance points and was paying well over $6000/yr for insurance. I just got my '01 QC 4.7 w/auto and they had a nearly identical truck with the 3.9, but insurance was the same. I went with the 4.7 because the milage difference was trivial, has far more horses and it will be used to occasionally tow a boat.
Boy what a difference from my 97 Prelude... v8s certainly sound nice....

The insurance cost on my 2001 4.7 QC is $10/month cheaper than my '98 Eagle Talon 2.0 (non-turbo) 5-speed ESI that I traded in for the dak. Go figure! LOL

Message: I just picked up a 97 Dak V-6 4X4. The truck is equipped with a standard 5 speed. I was wondering (since the local dealership is clueless) will the 5 speed bolt up to a 318,340, or 360? I want to use the truck for off-road adventures and therefore would like to retain the manual trans. I have a 340 that dyno'ed at 370 peak hp and 385ft lbs. Does anyone know it the transfer case can handle the load. I had planned on using the engine in a long term Duster project but thought "what the hell". I picked the truck up at a repo auction and the engine has a bad lifter and thought why not swap it instead of fixing it. Thanks
