Subject: 180 thermostat IP: Logged
Message: Anyone know where to get a 180 thermostat for my 2000 dakota 4.7L? I called the local dealer and they only have one listed which doesnt say if its a 180 or 195. I would assume its a stock 195 though.

Message: Dont they say the temp right on the thermostat? If not, the package definitely will. Be careful changing it. The intake manifold is aluminum and I stripped mine out. Almost rectally released a brick before I had a crash course in tap & Dies. NO more leaks and that was 4 years ago. WHEW!

Message: Pep Boys had a whole shelf of Stant thermostats. You can look up the part number for the stock in the book and then the one to the left is the cooler one. In other words, the book will list OEM replacement, but the 180 and 195 are only one space apart, find the one that is just one number lower.

Message: What are the pros and cons to installing a 180 stat?
If they are so good and everyone installs them, why dont the factory just install them? Im confused. Can someone help?

Message: hojo that is a good question,I would think the factory wants the engine to run at 195 for pollution rezons. In my opinion, there is know real gain in using a 180 stat for ever day driving and you sure don't want to run a 180 in the cold climates.

Message: Running a 180 stat is supposed to give you a few extra horsepower and increase the longevity of your engine due to lower engine temps (hoses, manifolds, exhuast, etc.). It is also helpful in reducing pinging which I've heard has been a big problem with some dakotas. I need to install one because I'm installing a stage II jet chip(due to unavailability of mopar chip) which requires the 180 stat. I've seen several people with the 4.7L dakota with a 180 stat so I know they're out there but who makes them?
Anybody have any problems going offroad with the z-tube? Looks like mud or water could get sucked right through the intake after removing the rubber flap mounted next to the right side of the radiator.

Message: DO A SEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT, PLEEEEEEZZZZZ!
First of all, it's a Robert Shaw T-Stat, same as the Magnum motors for the V-8.
Second, it's NOT on the intake manifold for a 4.7L.
Third, there are NO reasons not to do it, but it's not that big of a deal either. If you're going to get rid of the Belt fan, it's better to do it.
And before you start asking about removing your belt fan on your 4.7, do a search, it'll take take less time to find out what you want.

Message: You can purchase Robert Shawn T-stats online. I bought mine from SpeedTweaks. A 180-degree t-stat in cold climates is bad for your engine? That's bunk.

Message: I picked up a Robert Shaw 180 stat right off the rack at Autozone...#GT755-180. They didn't have a gasket for it, so I went across the street to O'Reilly's and got a Stant gasket, #27138. If you want to use the Stant 180 heavy duty T-stat, it's #65358. Here's a link that describes the install...

Message: I got my 180 t-stat (Stant) at Advance Auto for about $2...a super cheap mod for the function that it performs. My 99 Dak had a horrible case of spark knock, but after I installed the 180 t-stat and the Autolite 3923's, the spark knock went away. The 180 t-stat, I've heard, is supposed to give you a little better fuel milage, but I dont really know. As far as the t-stat in colder climates, I live in NW Ohio, and we have some pretty cold winters from time to time, and I wouldnt suggest running a 180 t-stat in the winter. But my Dak never sees snow anyways...she's stored in the winter :-)

Message: Hey Pistel Pete,
He has a 4.7.
And the 4.7 uses the same gasket as before. Actually, it's kind of an O-ring. But a search will find the simple mods to the 0-ring that is needed to put in a Robert Shaw GT755-180.

Message: All the people that work in the auto parts stores in this town are idiots. Could someone post a stant heavy duty stat part number for a 4.7? Other brands will work too, as long as it'll fit a 4.7. It might also be handy if anyone has a diagram or any useful shop manual type information on the 4.7 - even a description of the location of the stat and anything I should look out for when changing it. After I get my hands on a stat, my next step is a set of HO cams.

Cotharyus,
it's at the lower rad hose, in the block, on the passenger side. Pop off the lower plastic shield, 8mm bolts take off the housing there. LIke posted, it's a Robert Shaw, GT755-180, forget what the parts manual says, it's not in there.
