Message: I hear alot of talk about HP gains on everything
from intakes to chips but are any of you using
dynos or are you just flying by the seat of your
pants? Read between the lines when it
comes to upgrades...
Hell ive seen 5 different K&N ads that boast
anything from 5 to 20HP. Ive seen dyno results
and these numbers are usually around
60MPH, thats where you see your gain. Hardly
realistic for us city racers.

Message: See my "Dyno Results" post from a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, my baseline numbers were after I did an AirAid and Gibson cat-back, but I picked up 20rwhp after adding a Mopar Perf. PCM, QuickD TB, and switching to 32 inch tires.

The reason you see the '60 mph' is because that's the speed in the test gear - some dynos record in mph rather than in rpm. This is often in second or third ( or even fourth ) gear. What matters is the rpm at which the gain is shown. 60 mph in third gear may be 4000 rpm, very useful in first and second gear.
The reason for the differnt hp gains in the K&N ads could be due to the different engines the filters were tested on. If their FIPK gives a 5% power increase, on a 100 horsepower engine that's just five hp. On a 400 hp engine that's a 20 hp gain. Too, some engines have a much more restrictive intake than others - replacing that restrictive intake system could yield greater gains than replacing a well-designed intake.
