Subject: need a new cat? IP: Logged
Message: With the modifications of an intake, headers, and better flowing muffler do I need to upgrade the catalytic converter? If not, when is this needed if at all?

Message: If I remember correctly, it is illegal to swap a cat unless it's damaged. At least in California. Though I don't know if "beat on with a hammer" counts as damage :D

Message: Under Federal EPA regulation, replacement of original catalytic converters is allowed only if
the original converter(s) is missing, or the vehicle has more than 50,000 miles or is at least
five years old and the need for a replacement has been established and documented, or a local inspection program has determined the existing converter is in need of replacement.

Message: If your '95 or below(pre OBDII) Id gut the d@mn thing. Gutting mine was the single most hp producing mod I did until I had head work done. Now I live in SC where there is no emmissions testing so Im going to replace it with a straight pipe because the hollow cat causes an unusual sounding exhaust note(not bad, just different) Ive heard people say "they're not as restrictive as you think", those are the people who havent ridden in a Dak without a cat. BTW I did pass a sniffer and visual inspection like this, though that's no gaurantee that you will, it depends on the condition of your motor. If your against doing this, Id suggest a Random Tech cat. They have the best flow rate in the industry. I have them on my wifes car(she would'nt let me gut hers) and on my old LS1.

Message: Tyler: Dude! There's something wrong with your truck if you've gone through 4 cats in 30,000 miles! Thats unbelievable! Oh, and to answer your question, yes you can bypass/eliminate the cat on your truck. You need what's called a "cat-box". I dont know that much about them (my truck's a '92) but Im sure others will fill you in. If not go to http://www.moparchat.com/forums/index.php?s=b5e7b97483e8829792c459aed2f5488c and ask those guys, I know they've talked about them a bunch but Ive never really read any of it since I dont need it.

INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET
THERASTAT GASKET
DIFFENCIAL GASKET
STERIENG COLUMN
WIPER RELAY
FOGLIGHT RELAY
CRUISE CONTROL SERVO
ANDthats just the stuff that i can get fixed.
i can't even keep up eith the other problems

Message: I wondered the same thing, I was really worried that the O2 sensors weren't working and that my engine was continually running too hot. It's one thing to have the problem fixed for free - but I needed to know if there was a bigger problem causing it. From what I've read it takes intense heat to blow the ceramic in the cat. I've also heard that the placement of the cat on the V6 contributed to it. The dealership was no help whatsoever, so through word of mouth I found a couple of great mechanics who specialize in performance AND have a couple of modded up older Daks. I left my truck with them for 3 days, they checked it out thoroughly and ran every diagnostic on it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my truck, the 02 sensors are fine, they said it has to be the cats. (I'm on my fourth). So, if my truck is fine, I'm just going to continue to let Chrysler replace them for free until the warranty runs out, then I will put in a good one.
