Subject: '97 &98 V8 Auto tranny question IP: Logged
Message: I know my '97 5.2 auto came with the 44re tranny, can anyone tell me for sure what a 98 R/T came with? Was it the 46re, or did they still use the 44re?

Message: The "RT" has the 46re. ?? If you are thinking of the switch it will slow you down, the 44re has a lower frist gear ratio, less power loss and is lighter. My advice is to get a shift kit unless you go over 500hp.

Message: Thanks. I have a '97 SLT 5.2 CC and I just bought a 40k mile totalled '98 RT CC. I was planning on swapping all of the drivetrain. The 360 block will be a direct bolt on to the 44re right?

Message: Yes it would be a direct bolt on.... i dont see why you wouldnt use 46RE trans.... but remember IF you DO use the 44RE... the 360 is externaly balanced with the converter so i dont know if you can use a 46RE converter with a 44RE trans......plus the PCM will think you have a 46RE so i dont know if that would cause a problem

Message: I am going to have to use my '97 PCM and have it flashed to cooperate with the 360 and 3.92 rear gears, so I don't spec that will be a problem. Reason I have to use the PCM from my '97 is because the harness from the '98 has additional wires for 2 more O2 sensors than the '97 does, I do not want to change harnesses, plus there are probably more issues I haven't encountered yet. The 44re and 46re use the identical connecters so swapping them will not be a problem. However, The 44re is rated to handle more power than the R/T comes stock with, is lighter than the 46re, and has a lower first gear, so I have been told from a previous post. So doesn't it sound like a reasonable thing to do?

Message: I am not going to use the harness (1) because the truck was hit hard by a cattle truck head on in front of the driver side headlight and the relay box is pretty crushed up. The harness is not attached to the relay box by connector, but instead the wires are spliced directly into the box. And (2) because changing wire harnesses is not my specialty. There are parts of the harness which even go into the cab to mate with the instrument cluster. I see the work and cost associated as being better by keeping the '97 harness attached and having the PCM flashed.

Message: who is going to reprogram you PCM? From what I understand you cant change the complete program in the PCM. And the VIN is encoded into the PCM and your VIN will id the truck as a 5.2L and a 5.9L........

Message: You can use the 44re if you wish but you have to buy the balance kit from mopar perf. for the converter. PN# P5249843 Just have to get the wieghts welded on, there is a template supplied.

Message: I will have KRC flash the PCM. VIN is only used on 98+ dakotas. 97 PCM does not use VIN.
