Put my flowmaster 40 series on the truck today... little disapointed...from what I understood from this site, I thought it would be much louder then it is. It's louder then stock and it sounds very very nice, don't get me wrong, but anything but the 40 series you wouldn't be able to hear. I have JBA headers and the 40 series flowmaster with the 3" pipe from the muffler complimenting my 5.2 but I thought it would be louder. Maybe b/c I'm 21 and loud has a different definition to me then to someone else but it's not really that loud. If I had it to do all again I would get the same muffler b/c it sounds sweet but just not irritatingly loud.

Awake dakota, awake I say and go fast, really really fast!

That's why i went with 21/4 pipe so i didn't worry about any mufflers.The sound is rich and very throaty and the sound inside the cab isn't to loud.Bigger pipes mean more loss of back pressure that's why a muffler is used.I didn't want that restriction so I went with the best way.Just my 5.2cts.

I am 25 and I know what you mean,I thought the same thing when I put the same muffler and 3" pipe from the cat back on my 2000 Dakota R/T,but have you had a friend drive and floor your truck for you?Trust me,its louder than you think.I dont even have headers yet and its loud.I had thought it was going to sound like my 1969 Dodge Coronet,with 2 1/2" duals with 40 series flowmasters,but still,I ma very happy with it,if you want louder still,buy a 3" flowtech cutout and put it right before the muffler,thats what I did.Good luck with your 5.2,kickass motor.Oh,I only uncap the cutout for the track and special occasions,its too loud for daily use in my opinion.

Well I'm 52 ....but I like motor noise like I am 20. Did you run a complete tailpipe? We just put a 3 inch turn down (dump) behind the Flowmaster on my son's 5.2 R.C. It is loud in AND out of the cab. I tried that on my 5.2 CC but it was too loud for the Mrs. I ran it over the rearend and then dumped it. Now everyone is happy. Sometimes I turn off my radio, open the rear slider, and just cruise listing to my favorite band. It is named 8 Cylinder 5.2.

I have the whole pipe from the muffler to the back of the rear tire. 3" all the way back. I actually think I like a little better now that I have heard it for a few days. It definitly sounds awsome! It's really really deep at idle on up til you get to about 3000 rpms then it really opens up roars. I think I like listenig to the exhaust better then I like the radio. On the way home from work I actually turned off the radio to listen to the sweet, sweet sound of 5.2 beauty!

When you replace the exhaust you have to give it time to get broke in like when you buy new shoes they are stiff at first but after whereing them for a fdew months they form to your feet and feel great so let the exhaust get broken in and it should gradually get louder my 68 Dart GTS did after about 4 months of driving it on nice days when we have them here in Mn.

Do you have an upgraded intake system yet? If not
it will also help in making just a little bit louder; I added k&n to my 5.2 with the flowmaster catback, and I think it sounds just right; Now all I need is some kickin headers and it should be
perfect;

Question...

Other than "sounding fierce" do Flowmaster exhausts help any with the gas mileage...or is it just a sound/horsepower benefit?

I have a full aftermarket exhaust system and I'm still getting only about 13.5mpg in a 5.9L. That's about 1/2 and 1/2 city/highway.

Gas mileage has gone down with headers and exhaust. But then again, I can't keep my foot on the gas because it feels so good. Thought I would get better mpg but I can't tell yet...oh well!

I need to make a correction, the SUBJECT should read "RE:Flowmaster, too quiet!"

Sorry about that!
