Message: Does anyone make a conversion to remove my POS automatic and replace it with a 5 spd. If someone wants to donate a Viper 6-spd, I'd consider installing that instead.
Seriously about the conversion though? Anyone?
Can I just use the stuff from a 5.2L and what would I need?
Thanks

Message: Ron,
The 5.2 trans will bolt to your 5.9l. You will need a new flywheel for the 5.9l (different external balance). Mopar Performance makes one that they advertise for the crate motors. I'm not sure what you will be able to use for a clutch with the NP 5-speed. You will also need a special pilot bushing to adapt you automatic (not machined) crank to the 5-speed input shaft. I don't remember the number of the bushing off hand.

Message: Cool
Thanks Travis.
That gives me someplace to start. If anyone else knows the part numbers or anything else, it would be much appreciated.
Next question would be is the NP(?)5spd capable of handling the 5.9L?
And do I need any kind of different crossmember or something under the transmission? And what about the Driveshaft...same length?

Message: Excuse my knowledge of Fords for a minute. When it comes to the F-150, you cannot get the bigger v-8 with a manual transmission. But they have always offered a manual transmission with the same engine in the heavy f-250s and above. For example, the 351 offered a manual in the f-250. Does Dodge also do this? You may want to check into this if you haven't already.

Message: This will show how naive I am about Dodge's but are the 318 and the 360 the same size physically? Because, If they are, then only the internal workings are an issue. Having to find a different bushing doesn't sound like too big a deal if the crank is machined differently but Manuel brings up a good point. Do they put a 5.9L/5spd combo in the rams? If so, do they have different crankshafts for a 5spd vs. an Automatic? That would seem odd.
All your help is appreciated.

Message: I have done some extensive research into this matter. The Viper 6 speed will not bolt up the bell housing is WAY different. The 5 speed trans. that was used in the 5.9 ram SS trucks are a piece of junk. A majority of this knowledge comes from a tranny jedi master in AZ. He owns a viper and rebuilds all kinds of trannys.

Message: the six speed is a pipe dream but it is interesting that someone makes a kit.
I had thought about the computer thing. Can someone verify that the computer would have to be flashed? Because, I understand that the computer would control shifting but if there is no shifting to control, what else would be affected? Would the fuel and timing maps be different for an auto vs. a manual? I'm just wondering if I could get by for a while without it to cut down the upfront cost of the project.
Who is the Jedi (transmission) Master in AZ? I'm in Phoenix.

Message: Thanks for the number Marc. I think I will give him a call and see what he thinks. I've only had my truck for about three weeks and I can already tell I'm gonna truly hate the automatic.

I haven't owned an automatic since 1990 and that was a 1976 Grand Prix...makes my Dak seem tiny. Thanks again and any other info will be appreciated.

Message: Check into the computer aspect more, just so you know what to expect. If a program is designed to monitor something and it doesn't see anything there, it doesn't ignore it. It responds with a MIL lite on the dash and respective codes about open/shorted circuits and sensors out of range, etc.
By the way, has anyone done a 5.9 conversion from a 5.2? Are there differences to cause problems in the conversion?
