Subject: V6->V8 Conversion IP: Logged
Message: I have the 1999 Dakota SLT with a 3.9 Mag-none. Will a 318 or a 5.9 bolt up to the trans from an original 3.9 configuration? Are there significant modifications required to convert to a V8? My decision is whether or not to just build up a 3.9 or go with the V8. It would be great to hear from someone who has already done this.

It isn't a direct replacement. You'll need the V8 springs, PCM, tranmission (if applicable - 5speed), and not to forget that if you swap out the engine...you'll have to go to your local BAR and have them inspect it to make sure it complies with local emissions or inspection laws. Then, they'll give you a new VIN number to make it legal.

I would have to dbl-check...but I don't think you'll have to change out the transmission for the V8 conversion (if it's an automatic).
Again, let me dbl-check though...

Message: Here you go:
V8 converter has 8 more teeth, and 1" taller ring gear. The 42/44RE are not quite the same transmission. The 44RE has a few more clutches, and a double wrap band whereas the 42 has a single for the rear drum.

Message: Hi, i did this conversion about 10 months ago on a 1998 Dakota. I was able to reuse my automatic tranny, and torque converter. the v-6 torque converter gives you about a 500 rpm higher stall speed. and you don't have to change the front or rear springs I did'nt and I had no problem with bottoming out or anything like that, it actually helped with weight transfer when I would get on it! one thing to remember, make sure that your other motor comes complete! you will need the computer,wiring harness, motor mounts, fan shroud(the v-6 radiator works fine, just get a 1pound higher pressure cap)and there are some sensors and small parts that are expensive if they arent on your other motor! also your flexplate from the 3.9 will not work.you will need to get one for the motor your putting in. if you have any questions e-mail and i will try to help you.

Message: I was in the same boat with an under-powered '99 V6. Started pricing everything required to do the change. Then I got an opinion from a friend that happens to be a big motor head and mopar mechanic. He said rather than try to change all that stuff out, sell it and find an R/T! He was right. By the time I tallied up all the upgrades, I was too close to a used R/T. And besides, with all the performance upgrades that are stock on the R/T, you'll only be trying to clone one.
DON'T DO IT!

Message: A old 318 in a dakota? thats a shamefull waste. the 80's 318's were tough but they didnt really have any balls. 170hp and 260torque is about it. pointless. plus to do it, you have to replace alot of sh!t. pointless to do all that work for a performance downgrade. if you want a "beefy" engine, your way better off "beefing up" a magnum v8 and dropping that bitch in there.
