Subject: Cherry Bomb Vortex muffler any good? IP: Logged
Message: The local Meineke muffler shop has this Vortex muffler that I am thinking about using as a replacement for my stock muffler. I have a 2000
CC 4.7L 3.55 45RFE Dakota. They want $100 installed. Is this a good deal? The muffler is a fully welded and powder coated black. The vortex looks like a good idea. Can't seem to find much info about this muffler.
Thanks, good board you have here.

Message: DStarr,I installed one on my 98 V6, did it myself, took a little time but saved 65 bucks. I like it ,nice mellow tone ,if you want a loud throbbing sound this muffler won't give it,but it is straight through with no baffles or diverters or such so it is as high flow as any of the others,(in my opinion).

Message: DStarr, I got mine from a wholesale dealer for just under 40 dollars.Used original clamps ,had to leave out one hanger, would'nt fit, took an air powered cutter to stock unit so I had all original pipe length to use, had to cut close to muffler body. I'm too cheap and stubborn to pay for some auto work. Good luck, I'm sure you'll like it.

Message: FWIW, same 'chain shop' did my Flowmaster install...said those high price Borla mufflers where just a 'cherry bomb' muffler in a tasty (aka: expensive) casing...however, he did try to sell me some no name brand setup...I said NO...I swear by the Flowmaster I had him install (he swears at the install process)

Message: Well I bought the Vortex muffler. Sounds good. Maybe just a tad too loud. Seems that I lost a little low end torque, but the high end power is a lot better. Well worth it.

Message: Mike, I just got a VORTEX muffler installed on my 4.7 in place of the stock muffler. Love it. The design is different then any other, so is the sound and performance. Iam now in the 6.6-6.8 seconds 0-60. Only other thing I have done is a drop-in K&N and I use 89 octane gas.

Message: DStarr, glad to hear the Vortex worked out ,thought you'ld like it. I have an airaid intake ,try 180 thermostat,3923 plugs and an IAT adjuster from SpeedTweaks. I just got my adjuster a week ago and can really tell the difference,my V6 gets up and moves even with a/c on. I also installed an electric fan, every little bit helps. Alan

Message: I have a 96 Toyota Tacoma.
I got the vortex cherry bomb from Mineke.
I love it... it has a nice throaty sound, it made a small increase in power... 3-5% I'd estimate. My truck is "rice", but it doesnt sound ricey... it sounds like a 6 cylinder even though it's a 4 cyl. Goodyear... get one of these vortexs, you'll be glad that you did.
... and pick your nose at those rice grinders with their 4inch chrome coffeecan exhausts!!! Those cars may look nice, but damn they can be annoyingly loud! =]

Message: I have it on a V6 and like the sound, Its different from the Gibson i had on my other V6 The gibson could get a little ricey at higher RPM's the Vortex does not. It's certainly not a flowmaster but it is almost as quiet in the cab as stock with a mellow rumble outside. Overall i am happy with it

Message: I just got back from a swap meet out at the englishtown racetrack, and noticed for the first time, the Vortex. My big thing is that its different than all the others.
Everywhere you go, stickin out the back of everyones pickup is a set of Gibsons.
For once something different, it looks like a bad ass setup, all welded steel, heavy, and powder coated black! Judging by all the previous messages on this board, it probably sounds just as good.
I'm going back tomorrow to buy it.
$175.00 with dual pipes.
99 Chevy Z71, black, with 4" sus. lift, and 33" tires, high polish aluminum rims.
This ought to be a nice touch.
I'll let you know.

Message: Cherry Bomb Vortex. 98 Chev 5.0. Awsome sound, although my gas mileage did suffer. I can't keep my foot out of the throttle, I get a big stupid grin every time I nail it. I even go to the door and listen to it go every time the girlfriend drives away, just to hear the throaty rumble. As an added bonus the rice burner guys shut their cars off to hear my truck go by. Definitely worth the money. It has lasted two Canadian winters, many trips off road,{although the paint burnt off after one week), and as much abuse as I can give it. Buy it and you will find yourself turning down your stereo to listen. Big stupid grins soon to follow!!

Message: cherry bombs are no good. Spend the extra money and get something that sounds like an exhaust system, not a staight pipe. I had the cherry bomb on at one time and it was loud, but it was not very nice sounding. I now have a Gibson, not as loud when at low rpm's but rips at 3000 plus. Plus it sounds alot cleaner.

Message: I installed the cherry bomb on my '99 silverado a couple of weeks ago and havent stopped enjoying it yet. I had 3" flared tips welded on, wich also made a big difference. I Had Meineke weld everything for me and stiffened everything up for $100.00. They actually had more work than I thought. They installed two new hangers welded on; welded the inlet, outlets, and cut and set new tips. Looks clean and sharp. The 302 motor puts out a nice sound through the bomb; 1500 up to 3000 RPM's. Nice rumble that you can actally feel in the cab. (Helps having a V-8 though).
I'm still thinking about headers though.
I'll let ya know.

Message: I purchased an 01 4.7 5 speed with a flowmaster muffler already on it. I wanted duals so I went to the local muffler shop which sold the cherry bomb vortex. The mechanic talked me into the vortex saying it would be a better muffler ( more free flowing, single in/ dual out). The first time I drove my truck with the new exhaust I noticed a difference, yes the sound was good, but the power, expecially the low end had gone. I drove it for 2 weeks and lost 2-3 mgp. Went back to the shop and had them replace the vortex with my old flowmaster then a Y-pipe out to the duals. You wouldn't believe what a good muffler does. Most people that I talked to that had the vortex and liked it had it installed when they bought the truck. Learn from my mistakes, stick to the good sh*t.

Message: Reason being why the Vortex muffler is not well known is because they arent made anymore. I work at maremont in Loudon, TN and we build mufflers and exhausts. The Vortex muffler was designed and built in the plant a few years ago to out perform the flowmaster. Flowmaster said we copied their design so we had to fight the case and lost. How we lost, I dont know because it's not even close to the flowmaster design but we cant make them anymore. I have one on my 3.9 V6 and i like it. It has a nice mellowed tone without the ricey sound. great performance also....
The guy that designed it had another design ready to build also that was louder and gave even more performance than the flowmaster but he got fired so we're now out of luck...

Message: hey i had one on my 00 R/T. It sounded great. I had it 2 1/2 inlet with 2 1/2 dual outlets with borla intercooled tips with a 4" exit. It takes the muffler about 400-600 miles to pack and once it does it gets louder. I loved the muffler. I then lowered my truck and had to cut the tailpipes off. WOW It sounds awesome. I get compliments and gestures all the time when i am out in my truck. They all want to know what i am running under the hood and what kind of exhaust i am running. But if you are worried about sound levels go with a dual tailpipe set up. It won't be too loud but it will sound very healthy.
