Message: I was told by the DMV that because of a federal law passed in 1980 any engine swap that changes the amount of cylinders the car has is illegal. Which means it cannot be insured for road use or driven on the road. Does anyone know if this is true or how to get around it? I already started the work on my car when I found this out. Pleas E-mail me responses. Make the Subject "Engine swap info". Thanks guys

Message: You have to check with your local DMV on legality issues. A 42RE won't last long behind the 5.9. It will last OK behind a 5.2 if you rebuild the clutch packs with HD parts and run a mondo cooler. The key is keeping the fluid cool and not overly abusing the tranny.
If you can pick up a 46RE the use that and knock yourself out. As for everything else what they said. Another part to look at is the rear end. If you start making big power you could break the 8.25" corporate rear end. It might be cheaper to trade for a 5.9R/T. It already has the heavy duty parts.
If I had a choice I'd look for a 4.7. The 5.9 only makes 15HP more but the potential in the 4.7 is way bigger.

Message: Jon, why would you even bother to ask your DMV? Do you think if I asked the EPA if its ok to remove the catalytic convertor, they will agree?
Dont be stupid! How much could it cost you to sell your weak motored truck and buy something with a V8 in it? Couple thousand? Worth the cost in my opinion. Plus your resale value will be higher when its time to sell. I wouldnt touch a truck thats been "Frankensteined"...especially by an amatuer.

Message: I asked the DMV because of the new emissions laws. My shop told me to ask because if I couldn't find a way around it I wouldn't meet inspection. Also, if you do something illegal to your car and your insurance company finds out you lose your insurance and if you are caught driving without insurance they can put your car in the impound. It's too much hassel not to make it legal. Also I am doing the swap to a mustang. I only posted here because I am also doing a V6 to a V8 swap. I am saving about $15,000 by doing the swap opposed to buying a new cobra and selling my V6. After the swap my car will put out a little overr 400hp opposed to a cobra's 320 or 390 in the case of the supercharged 2003 cobra. So I will save money and have a more powerful car.
