Message: I think the differences in gas mileage depend on what year and even what month the truck was built. Mine is a 2000 with 3.55 built in 09/99. DC keeps updating the PCM flashes I hear to fix some of the problems with the comp. Unfortunately their solution is to retard the timing/spark which decreases mpg and performance.
Tripping no, I check my gas mileage almost everytime I fill up, and this is a pump check no bs from the comp.
Never let a dealership reflash your PCM unless their is something horribly wrong with your truck and this is the only way they can fix it.

Message: The 4.7 gets better milage then GM's 4.3L in the S-10 and blazer and it gets the same milage as the 3.9 v-6 so if your buying a dakota and you want the biggest engine within your fuel limits get the 4.7.
Does anyone think the diffrence between dak20004.7 and adam might have been the rear end gears. Just a thought.
If your are going to be pulling a trailer all the time get the 5.9 because it gets the best fuel eco under load.

Message: I dont think gears would make that much of a difference. Maybe 1 and almost possibly 2 but not 5. I'm not doubting you though. Sometimes you can get an engine that runs more effeciently than others. Being auto or standard doesnt even make that much of a difference now days.
My truck is 2001 CC 4.7 5 speed 3.92 LS Flowmaster catback if anyone is wondering
The comp is not BS. Actually it is more reliable than the pump. It averages the readings over the last several miles. If you are driving in the city for a while it will show you your average MPG. If you are driving hwy for a while it will still show you your average MPG. When you check it at the pump you are only checking what MPG you got with that tank. Who cares what MPG you got with that tank? What matters is what you get while driving city and what you get while driving hwy.
Example:
Lets say your truck gets a true 20 mpg hwy and 13 mpg city. After you drive in the city for a whiole your comp will say 13 avg. After you drive hwy for a while it will say 20 mpg. Now lets say you drove city with half a tank and hwy with the other half. If you check it at the tank you would get an average between the city and hwy mpg. In this case that would be 16.5 mpg. What good is this number except to tell you what mpg you got with that tank? Don't forget that your truck doesnt know if you are on a hwy or in the city. Therefore, driving down a higher speed limit road and making all of the stop lights through the middle of the city might as well be considered hwy. This technology has been around for a long time. You can't tell me that engineers havent been able to fix it to make it read correctly yet.

I average 15.6 mpg on a tank. Around 13.5 to 14.5 around town. About 17 to 19 on the freeway.
I think that's good mileage for a V8 with automatic and full-time four wheel drive. My truck has 3.55 gears and almost every option. It weighs just under 5,000 pounds with a fiberglass shell out back and me up front.
cheers,

Message: With a mix of highway and city driving, heavy foot included, I usually average about 15 MPG. I have a 2001 Dak QC Auto 2WD 3.55 gears. The best I've seen is around 17MPG, but again still a mix of city and highway. The worst I have seen is low 13's, but that was when it had real low miles and tons of stop-and-go traffic (lovely Seattle). It got better the more miles I put on it, due to the break-in I imagine. Now I've never gotten below 14.

Message: CyberWolf,
Thanks for your little explanation of how driving in city and hwy on the same tank works and average out, but I am aware of that. When I say city I mean all city, I don't have to get on the hwy to go to work. And when I say hwy I mean almost all hwy except for getting to and getting off and to a gas station.
And yes those overhead computers that tell your mileage are usually bs.
Sorry, if your truck gets crappy mileage but that doesn't mean mine does. I think most of it depends on what version of the flash is on your PCM, usually the newer the worse as I tried to explain before.

Message: Calvin,
If your doing mostly hwy get the 3.55 rear end gears. As it is w/ my 3.55 I can't keep my tires from spinning, but that will be fixed w/ Comp. Eng. slide-a-link traction bars. 3.92 would only make your tires spin easier and get a little worse of mileage.

Message: 2001dak4.7, this had nothing to do with "mine gets bad mileage so yours has to also". I was just explaining how these work. Read my post again. I think I even said, "I'm not doubting you though. Sometimes you can get an engine that runs more effeciently than others." Don't be so touchy. I'm only here to help. If you still think that they are usually BS then why did you get that option? You could install a sunroof instead. I'm sure you could probably seel that overhead console to someone that doesn't have one. Man, those stupid engineers. When will they ever figure out that that computer is wrong? (sarcastic tone)
Peace y'all

Message: the lid i put on my 4.7 5 speed gave me a 1mpg gain after putting it on. I'm getting close to 18mpg now with the lid currently removed and headers on and that's the only mod on my 4x4. Beware, the mileage u get for the first 1000 miles will scare the crap out of you, but it slowly gets better.

Message: My 01 Dakota CC 4x4 4.7 has an overhead console. One of the modes is "average" mpg and another is current mpg. Leaving it on current mpg will scare the he!! out of you if you have a heavy foot. Anyway, I have yet to see the "average" mpg over 14. I only have 2400 miles so far and have not done much highway driving. Hope this gets better, but I didn't buy the 4.7 for the gas milage. The performance is great!

Message: It's so strange of that break-in period. I suppose everything is *NEW* and has a lot of friction to drive those wheels.
During the drive home from my dealership, my gas guage dropped 3/8 of a tank from Full.
The dealership was about 70 miles away. Seemed like that I could just watch the gas needle drop every mile I drove. I was getting worried that I had a leak in my gas tank!
Course, this is the part of the 'break-in' period of a new Dakota driver too. More so a good 'break-in' to your wallet. Gas stations will be your next new best friend.
You will get better gas milage in time.
I'm up to 17MPG's on a good week. (mostly city driving, lots of stop and go). I can scratch 19-20 driving strictly highway.
I have an intake, 3923 autolite spark plugs, 180 T-stat, and a tonneau cover.

Message: Getting 16-18 mpg with mostly highway driving. Have the 3.55 rear end.
BTW all else being equal the 3.92 rear end will hurt gas mileage. The engine will turn over higher RPM's at crusing speed. The math says it will hurt gas mileage by 10.422%. However at the higher revs the engine is operating in a different power zone and may be a little more or less efficient. Efficiency cannot overcome the 10% deficit. But it might make the difference small enough to confuse the issue.
