Subject: 4.7L V8 supercharger owners reply IP: Logged
Message: OK, the gift from the gods has just been bestowed upon me. I have permission from my wife to either trade in my 2000 QC 4x4 Auto 3.55's 4.7L V8 for a 2002 QC 4x2 5 spd manual 3.92's 4.7L V8, or keep the 2000 & purchase a KB supercharger. Either way will cost me about the same but the tradein loss will not be out of pocket since I would refinance the loss.
Anyway, I need help in making a decision. I am looking for anyone who has bought the KB supercharger for the 4.7L V8 Dakota who can give me their opinion. Anyone who has info on how it may or may not work in the 4x4 Auto would be greatly appreciated also. Any engine upgrades to prolong the engine/tranny life would be helpful as well.
Initially, I was going to wait for the 5.7L V8 Hemi to reach the Dakota line & then trade in my 2000, but recently I read an article that the 5.7L V8 Hemi will not be available till 2004 & then it will only see action in a sedan. After that, the Ram will get the first crack at it but the way it sounds, it could be a long wait before we see it offered in the Dakota line.

Message: Dont have a supercharger but i imagine it would be cool. I also have a pontiac gtp Supercharged and its fun to drive. But i would go with the new truck for the fact that its a 5 speed and has better rear end gears. That is a really fast truck word has it and i think it would be more suited for a supercharger sometime down the road. But i wouldnt go away from the 4x4. That package really makes the truck look like a truck.

Message: I also plan to add a KB to my 4.7 so I don't have any useful information yet. The only negative I can see is that you will need to run 92 octane gas all the time. Makes your costs go up a bit.

Message: Mike M, thanks for the info. I barely have permission to spend the money & if I did & had the same problems you did, I would be mad to say the least, so would my wife. I had heard of a few people having similar problems when KB first came out with the 4.7L SC but I was hoping they would have addressed it by now. One guy was so dissapointed & complained of the poor technical assistance & wanted to return it but was denied. Anyway, it sounds like I'd be better off with trading in my 2000 QC 4x4 Auto 3.55's 4.7L V8 for a 2002 4x2 5 speed & 3.92's & while not getting the performance of a SC at least the stock configuration will be a little peppier than mine & there are more aftermarket mods available. I even thought of trading in my Dak for a GM Chevy or Ford since the aftermarket loves them & has just about anything you want including PCM reprogrammers. The only thing with the other MFG's trucks is they are all heavier than the Dak & even though they offer bigger engines you'll loose the gain with the increased weight. A 350 Vortec engine in the right truck sounds like a good combination though!

Message: Gm sounds like a good solution. Altho it is not a speed truck. And it sounds like that is what you want.
My dak is the only truck I have had in the shop besides regular mat.(oil changes and replacing all fluids) I have had to replace the tranny and transfur case. Transfur case is gone agian. Being replaced under warrenty. I am buying extended warrenty on my dak to cover any thing else that goes wrong. Seems like buy a dak I buy a machanic.

Message: Well, wouldn't you know it, I'm on my way home from work the other day & a 20 year (dumb/inexperienced/new car/new driving dope) girl pulls out in front of me. Needless to say I hit her & am told she is responsible but her insurance co is fighting for me to be a small percentage responsible(since I didn't smash the sh.. out of her in my opinion). Anyway, a lesson I am learning is to hit the car that pulls out in front of you in the front side as opposed of the rear side & they won't question the incident as much. From all the calculations I should be ok but until the police report comes out, I'm still not in the clear.

Message: Looks like her insurance co will pay 100% no questions asked. However, I bet I still have something go wrong with it down the road that was accident related & I won't be able to prove it. Still not sure about keeping it & getting a Kenne Bell s/c. Some people say don't, others are happy with it, would love to hear more replies!

Message: Her insurance co is Allstate. I have been told if anything is wrong with it that the auto body shop didn't find/fix then to take it back & they are obligated to do so. They tore it down Monday & parts are on order, hope it won't be much longer, we'll see.

Message: Well, go my truck back. Everything seems to work like new before the accident. Test drove the crap out of it & couldn't find anything wrong with it. I almost forgot how nice it really is. A few days before I got it I test drove a Ford Mustang Cobra & a Pontiac Trans am. The Cobra was a little ripper but you didn't get the full power affect until 3000+ rpms, after that it just screamed. Then there was the Trans-am, it had the 5.7L V8 with the ram air & all. It really moved. It had power at any rpm & when you jumped on it hard it responded with authority. I am really thinking about getting one. I don't know if I would regret giving up my truck though. Also, going from a 4x4 truck to a slip sliding rear wheel drive trans am would be challenging in the winter. The trans am brochure said not to use tire chains so I wonder if snow tires would help that much? Anyway, if DC ever puts the 5.7L Hemi in the Dak it should be awesome as an all around truck. Maybe I'll get a trans am in the meantime & trade it in if/when Dodge puts in the Hemi. I heard the redesigned Dak will be bigger/heavier-that doesn't help performance!

Message: The most important thing I ever learned after being in multiple accidents where someone else was at fault and I wasn't injured: Go directly through their insurance company, don't even bother telling your agent that you were in a wreck unless you absolutely need their assistance.
I call their claims department directly and have them arrange for a rental car, then I pick the best shop off their own list. Take it to that shop and make sure they have directions to fix it to the absolute best of their abilities instead of merely following what the adjuster wrote down for them - If they do the repair right, the insurance company must pay the repair bill (and I've never had one even remotely argue with me because I used their recommended shop).
To this day I haven't had a single insurance give me any grief over this procedure, because I used all of the companies they recommended and had the bill sent directly to them. My insurance isn't any the wiser, and my rates haven't budged. In some ways I'm glad for idiotic drivers, after my last car got hit for the 3rd time, I managed to find the Dakota R/T I'm driving today.
