Right now the only fix for the 2001 4.7 auto,
would be a chip ,try ASE chips they told me it removes the speed limiter, and 10%HP 10% torque i might be wrong?http://www.asechips.com/main.html(714) 632-9344 $ 449.00

As far as I know all the ones in Canada can run to 117MPH. Also I think I remeber manual and auto sometimes making a difference.

Speed Limiters come standard on all cars manufactured in the United States. Most standard cars are set for 110 to 120 mph, The 97 Dakota I have is set for 98mph. Most sports cars don't have them because they are used on private tracks. No matter what state you are in, you can take your car to any dealership and request they remove the Limiter. The Dealership has to deactivate it if you ask them, but they figure if they turn it on at the factory that most owners wont bother to shut it off. So it doesnt cost anything, except for maybe a few hours in the shop.

My understanding is the speed limiter is set by the factory based on the stock tire speed rating.

I assume that if the speed limiter kicks in at 98mph then your stock tires had speed rating of Q.

Tire ratings listed below.

Q Up to 99 mph (160 km/h)
S Up to 112 mph (180 km/h)
T Up to 118 mph (190 km/h)
U Up to 124 mph (200 km/h)
H Up to 130 mph (210 km/h)
V Over 130 mph (210 km/h)

I think that this tire issue has come to light the last 2 or 3 years,I would think a 93 would be safe.To tell the truth It would have taken a long time for me to find out about this speed limiter, had it not been for this forum.I dont drive that fast very often.I had a 1977 BIG ranger 4x4 w/ V8 351 that couldent get up to 90 mph going downhill (my first new truck) even the speedo only went up to 90mph.No real speed limiter other then the over smoged V8.Had my 91 ranger up to 120mph no problem. All I can suggest is maybe try it and see.Drive safe. jj

Another guy there said if I could find out what to do, he could reflash the chip,as I told him about one of our posts here saying that if you want the limiter removed they HAVE to remove it,He claimed he dident know how to remove it ,the svs writer sayed that it would prob. void my warranty. What to do?Keep searching,Got to be an answer!

i have a 2001 dakota sport 3.9 v6 w/ the 16" wheel pakage. I had my truck over a 100 no limiter yet but i'm not trying to see when it will kick in either. Save the racing for the track and the *ss for the sack, anyways the limiter is set by the mfg. so that you do not exceed the max speed rating of the tire. picture this ok..... rollin down the highway at over the max speed rating of the tire when suddenly the belts separate inside and your tossed into a tree or what have you..... not a pretty sight, so i hope that's food for thought, i suggest that if you want to undo your speed limiter that you get yourself a set of tires that will handle the speed or speeds at which you are intending to do if you choose not to get a set of tires that handle higher speeds then your gambling with your own life and PLEASE stay the hell away from me when you decide to exceed the max rating of your tires cause i do not want you crashin into me thanx.

Well Jay you`ve gone 2 mph faster in your dakota then I have gone in mine.I Have the 16" goodyear`s "S" rated good for 112 mph.I`m stuck at 98.I dont really intend to zoom around at speeds in excess of 100 mph,it would just be nice to be able to ,if I wanted. It`s kind`a embarassing showing off my new dakota to my friend ,and him telling me his saturn will do 115mph, on the air force base of course. When ever I tell anyone of this limiter, they give me that look of disdain, even you are bragging you can go faster then me.I guess it all boils down to bragging rights, not the fact that I will actually drive that fast(like I could even find a place in LA) But just that I COULD. jj

The speed limiters are strictly for tire ratings. There is also Y and W ratings that are a subset of the Z "somewhere over 149MPH" rating.

108 and 120MPH are popular limiters w/ manufacturers.
