Subject: its free but will there be a problem? IP: Logged
Message: my friend is selling his 2000 R/T, and he knows i want the 3.92 rearend. so he said if i want, we can trade rearends before he sells the truck.
i just need to know is there any problem just trading out the whole rear axle? like abs problems, speedo error's, or anything else i should be aware of before starting the trade.

Message: You'll have to get the Speedo recalibrated, because it'll be off. Besides that? Nothing I can think of, should just bolt up. Make sure you replace the U-joint, don't reuse the old one! There are cheap enough.

Message: Uh... you know, it SHOULD match up since they'll be in the same general area, but you may need to do some patching. I don't know, never tried that. It should be close though, since likely they use the same brake systems.

Message: another thing, you may have to change your u bolts and your spring to axle pad. the 8 1/4" rear end has smaller axle tubes than the 9 1/4" used in the R/Ts and also some 2000-01 4.7s with the L.S. rear diff and the bigger rear gears. just something to think about. see ya. oh yeah. 3.92 gears rock!!! you'll love them

Message: I have the 9 1/4 rear end in mine and its not an R/T. kota if your friends rear-end is 9 1/4" as well there should be no problem with it fitting in yours...

Message: Just curious, if you have a 3.92 ratio, but you
don't own a R/T, is the rear end going to be a
9 1/4 or can the same gears go into an 8 1/4
(like in my case with the '00 Quad-Cab)?
Thanks, Al

Message: I'm a little confused because I'm not sure what your truck is(year and motor) but my son just got rid of a '99 R/T and it had the small rear end. The 4.7s have the larger rear end. If the Y2K R/T is the same as yours then the swap is a cinch. Speedo is on the housing reading the ring gear revs and will be correct. Abs SHOULD be the same. All brake plumbing should match up but a quick visual will tell you for sure.
I put 3.92s in mine and now I wonder how I ever lived without them before.
