Subject: Back fires and won't accelerate IP: Logged
Message: I have a 92 Dakota V6 with 215K miles. It starts right up every time but recently has begun running very rough, won't idle, and when you try to accelerate it coughs, sputters, and even back fires. This doesn't happen every time. Most of the time it will start and run smooth as glass with no problem. What could be causing this intermitting touble? Any ideas?
Many thanks.

Message: Thanks. Do you know where the fuel filter is? My guys at the oil change place couln't get a visual on it so I'm wondering if it is inside the fuel tank.

Message: Try looking at the inside of the framerail on the driverside in front of the fuel tank.

Message: Thanks. Will do. In the mean time I have replaced the rotor button and spark plug wires. That didn't fix the problem. It still does its thing so don't think it is ignition related.

Message: If the timing chain has never been replaced, it can be stretched and worn, causing a shift in valve timing.
But always check fault codes first:

Message: New plug wires, new rotor button in dist. and now new fuel filter but,,,,,,,,,,,still getting the same problem, every now and then. Seems like just doesn't want to run by sputtering not taking the gas. Then all of a sudden it will buck and there you go, smooth running for the rest of the trip. Next time I start it won't give me any trouble but couple of times later and watch out! I guess the next thing I'll look at is the fuel pump. Any better ideas out there?
I will check the fault codes on the timing chain but that repair would be over my head...Thanks Bob for the link you provided.

Message: i had that problem with my 96 dakota and my problem was the ceramic stuff inside the catalytic converter had broken apart and it was getting in the way of the exhaust and causing the truck to run poorly so that might be your problem. what i did was i cut the exhaust and moved the back half of it out of the way and put it to the floor coming around a corner and i heard it pop coming out and the truck ran good every day after that... you could try that

Message: I have discovered that each time it does the "thing" if I stop the truck, turn off the engine and then do a restart. The problem goes away. Now how weird is that?
Thanks for all the tips.

Message: It very well could be the crank position sensor. it is on the back of the block just behind the distributor and is held in with two bolts. the stock one has plastic mounting flanges and mine broke on my 93. if it vibrates and moves it will lose track of the crank and you will lose power and a big backfire...then it will run normal again until it happens again. replace it or at least pull it out clean it and make sure the tabs arent broken. (its just next to the bell housing behind the distributor.)
